Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions for Elementary Botany This manual is the product of twenty five years' experience in teaching elementary botany to students in the University of Michigan. At the beginning of that period the author started with a similar manual used by his predecessors and associates, the late Professor Volney M. Spalding, of revered memory, and Professor Frederick C. Newcombe. The outline of work has undergone considerable change since the time when the writer was given charge of the elementary course in botany at this institution. For these changes he has been largely responsible. As the students increased in numbers other men have cooperated in giving the laboratory work and lectures, and in the most recent years numerous discussions have been carried on as to how the course could be improved. Among those taking part in these discussions have been H. H. Bartlett, R. M. Holman, B. M. Davis, W. W. Tupper and others. The work outlined is essentially that now given at this University, but the present edition contains some material not previously included in the manual as used here, and for this as well as for the arrangement and composition, the author assumes sole responsibility. It is hoped that in its present form it will be especially useful to the instructors in botany in the junior colleges associated with city high schools. In recognition of the fact that in most cases those instructors will have limited library facilities, material has been incorporated into the present work that might properly be reserved for a text book rather than a laboratory manual. The reason for so doing is that some of the work herein presented is so new that it has not yet found a place in any textbook of botany. This is the justification for the paragraphs on vitamins and the newer knowledge of nutrition. Other topics are presented so inadequately in most textbooks that it has seemed worth while to give a new presentation. For this reason the carbon and nitrogen cycles have been included. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide for General Botany This laboratory guide is intended for the use of students in their first course in universities and colleges, or other institutions doing work of similar grade. It is not a teacher's manual, and therefore does not include information as to laboratory equipment, the purchase and care of apparatus and materials, nor references to the literature. The author believes that botanical instruc tion in America has now reached a stage where such directions to university instructors are no longer necessary nor appropriate. Book A Laboratory Manual of Botany

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of Botany written by Otis W. Caldwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Botany: Outlines and Directions for Laboratory and Field-Work in Botany in Secondary Schools This manual has been prepared in harmony with these convictions. In all his directions the author has aimed to make the study of botany full of meaning, of pleasure, and of profit to the young people who are to study the subject; to lead them to observe constantly and accurately; to form well-founded judgments from their observations; to inspire them with an intelligent and abiding love for nature; and to have them see and appreciate the ways in which the lives of plants are allied to their own lives. The manual is divided into two parts: Part I considers plants from the view-point of their physiology and ecology, while Part II considers their structure and evolution as they have developed with reference to the problems of nutri tion and reproduction. Either part may be used as the basis of a course in botany. When both parts are used, covering a year's course, the second may precede the first, if this order seems preferable. In either case Chapter I is essential as an introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Botanical Record Book

Download or read book The Botanical Record Book written by Josiah Keep and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Botanical Record Book: Containing Directions for Laboratory Work in Botany, List of Botanical Terms, Spaces for Drawings and Observations, Prepared Blanks for Recording the Analyses of Plants, Etc Whatever can aid either teacher or pupil in the study of Botany is worthy of attention. Especially is this true when the promised aid lies in the direction of making simple a series of actual experiments and observations upon plants and vegetable productions. There is very much to learn in the short time usually allotted to the study of this science, -the structure and morphology of the different parts and organs Of the plant, the meaning Of many new terms, the methods of analysis and classification, and the main features of the chief botanical orders or families. Moreover, the study of books and charts is not sufficient; but the pupil should see and handle the objects of which the lesson treats, and, if possible, should gather living specimens on the hills and in the meadows. The characteristics of the plant having been studied, a specimen should be carefully pressed, and at length should find a permanent resting place in that botanical casket, the student's herbarium. All of this work takes time; hence the course should be laid out orderly and with care. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Laboratory Directions for Elementary Chemistry

Download or read book Laboratory Directions for Elementary Chemistry written by Helen Isham Mattill and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions for Elementary Chemistry: Designed to Accompany a d104book of Chemistry by W. A. Noyes The importance of the laboratory work in a course in elementary chemistry cannot be too strongly emphasized. It is only by the actual contact and experimentation with some of the many materials described in a text-book that the student ever comes to any realizing sense of the means by which the science of chemistry has been built up. For this reason it is advisable to supplement the laboratory exercises with discussions of an explanatory nature, in which the correlation between laboratory and text-book work may be brought out. The experiments described in this guide have been chosen with the following objects in mind: To reduce the variety of materials handled, consequently the confusion of many new names and strange materials, to a minimum; to make each experiment a fairly exhaustive study of some particular material or property; to have the sequence of experiments such as will lead to a certain amount of reasoning from analogy. This guide does not pretend to be an exhaustive description of elementary experiments, but rather a selection of a few suitable, consecutive experiments from the many possible. I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the many helpful suggestions and criticisms which I have received from Drs. C. W. Balke, C. H. Hecker, S. B. Hopkins and W. A. Noyes in the preparation of this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions in General Biology The following laboratory-directions have been pre pared for a course in General Biology that extends throughout the collegiate year, and includes work in the laboratory for about six hours each week. Experience has shown that there are certain practical advantages in beginning with the fern and the earth worm, and that the results are not at all inferior to those that follow from the more logical method of beginning with the simplest organisms. Book A Laboratory Manual of Botany

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of Botany written by Otis W. Caldwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Botany: Outlines and Directions for Laboratory and Field-Work in Botany in Secondary Schools The newer points of view and the advanced methods in the study of botany during the past few years have greatly increased its desirability and efficiency as a disciplinary as well as an informational subject for study in secondary schools. It is believed that suggestions as to the laboratory and field work to be done by the students, based upon the more recent conception of the subject, will prove helpful. The diversity in age, maturity, and environment of the pupils who may pursue the subject, and the variations in the materials and equipment at their disposal, make it impossible, to formulate outlines that shall meet equally well the needs of all classes of students. Fairly definite suggestions are presented, however, and it is understood that each teacher will make additions or eliminations wherever such become advisable for his purposes. In the author's opinion much laboratory work has led to confusion or incoherent knowledge through an attempt to compel the student to discover things for himself which can not be so discovered. The so-called "development" method of teaching too often results in an ineffectual attempt of the teacher to lead the student to make a discovery. The student will certainly gain power and knowledge by such work in the laboratory, and he should be encouraged to do it within proper limitations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Botany: For Beginners This little book contains, in an abridged form, the elementary and more essential parts of the text of the larger Course of Practical Instruction in Botany. It is believed that beginners will find the directions sufficient to guide their first steps in laboratory work. The abridgment has largely consisted in the excision of supplementary descriptions of forms other than those which have been selected as the main types in so far as that is the case, the publication of this book may be thought to encourage a narrow style of type-teaching.
