This book was released on 2016-09-04 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions for an Elementary Course in General Zoology These laboratory directions represent the outline of the lab oratory course in general zoology as developed in the University of Illinois. The original plan of the course was formulated by Professors Henry B. Ward and Charles Zeleny. Individual out lines throughout the course represent the work and suggestions of numerous persons who have, at various times, been connected with the instructional staff in general zoology. 'the form found in the present volume is the result of many revisions and altera tions of the several mimeographed and printed editions which have been used with classes through a period of a considerable number of years. In recent revisions the cooperation of Profes sor V. E. Shelford has been especially valuable. An attempt has been made to secure a fair distribution of emphasis through a number of the more important aspects of the subject. Book Laboratory Directions in General Zo logy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Directions in General Zo logy Classic Reprint written by Winterton Conway Curtis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions in General Zoölogy These directions are a revision and extension Of publications by the senior author in 1912 and 1913, and by Curtis and Dodds in 1919. Beginning as printed outlines intended only for use in the University of Missouri, they have come into use in a number of other institutions, and it now seems desirable to provide for more general distribution. The present edition is, therefore, an outcome of some twenty years' development of the introductory course in Zoology at the University of Missouri. It is the result of progressive experimentation in both form and content. The authors know it works with underclass students in such an institution, because it is the product of so much experience, not only their own but also that Of their colleagues and assistants, who have contributed to each revision. The course, as given at the University of Missouri, occupies one semester and consists Of three two-hour laboratory periods and two one-hour lecture periods with time for quizzes taken from both. This is, of course, woefully inadequate for a well-rounded introduction to zoology, but is perhaps as much as can be expected where students in the College Of Arts and Science are expected to meet a similar require ment in physical science. Obviously, the present volume includes more than can be undertaken within these limits. It has been made more comprehensive, because the authors have Often found it desirable to vary the content in their own laboratory work and because a publica tion for general use may properly include more than the minimum needs of a Single institution. Book A Laboratory Manual for Elementary Zoology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual for Elementary Zoology This laboratory manual was prepared for the class in elementary zoology in the University of Chicago, and has been used in this course for some time. In the three months' time allotted for the course, nearly all of the work given in sections I to XII, inclusive, is completed, with the exception of the muscular and skeletal systems of the frog. The remaining sections have been added for publication because they seem to the author to be essential for a complete course in general zoology. The directions have been written entirely from the material, although, of course, many textbooks have been consulted throughout. An attempt has been made, not merely to give explicit directions for the study of the material, but also to point out the relation of each section of the work to the general principles of biology and to make clear why each particular kind of material has been selected. The sections are given, naturally, in the order which the author thinks most logical, but they can be shifted at the will of the instructor. Our experience, extending over many years of trial of both methods, has shown that starting the course with the dissection of a complex animal is much more satisfactory than introducing the student at the start to the lower invertebrates, for the reason that the simplicity of the latter cannot be appreciated and understood except with reference to completely differentiated animals. Any vertebrate would serve the purpose, but the arthropods are in general unsuitable because they introduce the problem of heteronomous segmentation for which the beginner is not prepared. Many teachers will object that the instructions arc too detailed and that it is better pedagogy to compel the student to work out things by himself; but the large amount of ground which must be covered in a relatively short time and the impossibility of providing sufficient laboratory assistants for the large classes with which we have to deal necessitate detailed directions. The student pursuing the modern college curriculum simply docs not have time to carry out an original investigation on the anatomy of an animal; and unless he is provided with detailed directions, instructors and assistants are overburdened with the task of explaining to him what he is looking at, what to do next, etc. There is no reason why this extra work cannot be avoided by including these explanations in the manual. Students who declare that they cannot draw will receive little sym pathy. Anyone can make the simple line drawings required in this work. To make a drawing proceed as follows. First determine how large it is to be and select a proper space on the page. Then rule this space with very light vertical and horizontal guide lines so that your drawing will be symmetrical. With a ruler further reduce or enlarge the length or width of the actual Object to fit the space selected. Then with very light lines make an outline of the object; then, constantly referring to the Object, correct this with light lines until the propor tions and details are as nearly like the Object as you can possibly get them. Then erase the light lines until you can barely see them, and go over them making the final lines firm and clear. Every line upon the drawing must represent a structure actually present on the Object. Avoid shading, color, crosshatch ing, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Elementary Course in Practical Zo logy Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Elementary Course in Practical Zo logy Classic Reprint written by Buel P. Colton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Course in Practical Zoölogy The principal change from the earlier edition consists in the addition of directions for field study and for the laboratory study of the live animals. In the nature of the work these directions must be somewhat general, and Should be modified by the teacher to suit local conditions and the requirements of the class. Because of the fact that conditions greatly vary in different localities, it is not to be supposed that each teacher can accomplish all the work here outlined. It is hoped that there is variety enough to suit most localities. Other types may often serve the purpose better than these here presented. The work must also be adapted to the age and experience of the students and to the time allotted to the subject. The author's reasons for the order of study here presented are given in the preface of the descriptive part of the book. For convenience, the practical part follows the descriptive text, but, of course, the actual study of the types Should precede any assigned lesson or reading in reference books. Book A Laboratory Manual of Zoology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of Zoology Classic Reprint written by Margaretta Burnet and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Zoology Since the conditions under which laboratory work is done vary exceedingly, it is impossible to outline a course which will be equally acceptable to all teachers. This little book, therefore, presents more forms than any teacher will be likely to want, in the hope that from among them a selection may be made that is fairly satisfactory. The frog is taken up first among the vertebrates, and very fully, so that, if preferred, it may be used as an introductory study instead of the crawfish. In this case, however, the pupil will need the teacher's help in answering a few questions referring to work in the earlier part of the book. In the opinion of the author the crawfish is much the best form that can be used for such a study, since it is remarkably well adapted to bring out many fundamental ideas, while being less specialized in its organs than either frog or grasshopper, and standing more nearly midway between the highest and the lowest forms. The studies in experimental chemistry and physiology which follow this are to be used at the discretion of the teacher in those classes where no work has been done along this line in connection with human physiology. The experiments may be given as demonstrations by the teacher, or the simpler ones may be assigned to pupils for performance before the class. Book Laboratory Directions in Principles of Animal Biology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Directions in Principles of Animal Biology Classic Reprint written by A. Franklin Shull and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions in Principles of Animal Biology The course for which this book of laboratory directions was prepared is a recognition of the growth which the science of Zoology has made in the past several decades. No longer a purely morphological subject, zoology is not in the opinion of the authors properly treated in a purely morphological course. Good teachers have long recognized that dis section and classification alone would not make a zoologist, and have striven in lectures and recitations to provide the larger outlook which the science has come to possess. But this recognition seems hardly adequate. If in the lectures and recitations due attention is paid to the type dis sections in the laboratory, morphology can scarcely avoid receiving an emphasis it does not deserve. If to avoid this over-emphasis the recita tions and lectures are devoted exclusively to evolution, distribution, ecology, genetics, etc., the laboratory exercises and recitations must seem unrelated to one another. Recitations and laboratory work thus become two courses Which the student pursues simultaneously. The only solution has appeared to be to make the laboratory work itself bear on the large questions of biology. The laboratory work may thus have a balance of its own, it does not need to be averaged with the recitations. This book contains directions for first-hand exercises which we believe have the emphasis properly placed. Morphology still receives more attention than any other division of the subject, but it is nearly everywhere directed to some end Which is not merely structure.
