Book Laboratory Diagnosis of Fungal Infections

Download or read book Laboratory Diagnosis of Fungal Infections written by Mohamed E. Hamid and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory Diagnosis of Fungal Infections: A Manual for Processing Specimens, Microscopy and Culture Techniques This manual describes briefly how to make a laboratory diagnosis of suspected fungal diseases. The diagnosis begins after receiving a good quality clinical specimen, then how to process it and or store it, taking into account basic safety procedures. This manual- unlike others which take diseases or names of fungi as topics- it takes the clinical specimens as the subject for analysis. Subsequently, the manual explains the diagnostic process step by step with help of schematic charts and a number of macroscopic and microscopic illustrations and pictures. As a short handbook, this effort enables practioners, laboratory technicians and researchers to accomplish laboratory diagnosis and identification of unknown fungus to the Genus level. However, we explained methods to reaching identification to species levels to some important fungal groups namely: dermatophytes, Candida and Aspergillus species. Details for species identification can be found elsewhere. When you know the genus or you have doubts between two or three genera, then you can find details in many textbooks and web sites. For this purpose we have provided references and websites at the end of the book.

This book was released on 2007-11-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagnosis and Treatment of Human Mycoses brings together globally-recognized mycoses experts to guide readers in the use of current knowledge in the field of medical mycology to manage those who suffer from fungal infections (mycoses). Often, diagnostic strategies and tests, including basic and directed culturing techniques, histopathology with standard and special stains, serological methods, and radiological studies all need to be considered and commonly combined to make the diagnosis of fungal infection. This volume first introduces and reviews these tools separately and then as they pertain to specific infections or groups of diseases. The volume consists of four parts. Parts I-III provide an overview of diagnostic and therapeutic tools, and part IV presents the human mycoses. Diagnosis and Treatment of Human Mycoses is meant to be a concise text that will provide the busy infectious disease, hematology–oncology, pulmonology, or critical care specialist a practical tool to diagnose and manage fungal infections. In addition, the depth of the material in the text will provide these and other medical specialists and trainees an excellent reference and learning resource.

Download or read book Fungal Infection written by Dr Joseph Stanley and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2022-12-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most of the natural world, fungal infections are common. When a fungus invades a human host, it can cause a fungal infection if the body's immune system is overwhelmed. About half of all nail abnormalities are caused by nail fungus infections, making this the most common nail disease. Although fungus is naturally found on the human body, it can become a nuisance if it multiplies too rapidly. Onychomycosis and tinea unguium are two other names for them. Infected fingernails or toenails will often change color, thicken, and crumble at the edges. This problem typically manifests itself in the toenails. Infected toenails affect about 10% of adults. In this article, we'll go over the basics of nail fungal infections, including their causes, symptoms, and treatments. There are both beneficial and harmful fungi, just as there are for many other types of microorganisms. Invasive pathogenic fungi present a significant challenge to medical professionals due to their ability to persist in the environment and re-infect the patient despite their best efforts. In this article, we'll discuss the risk factors for developing a fungal infection, as well as the signs and treatments available for several of the most common kinds. Symptoms Symptoms of a fungal infection are often noticeable changes in the skin's appearance and itching. The following are some of the common symptoms of a fungal infection, though they vary depending on the type of infection: - alterations to the skin, such as peeling or cracking - itching Keep reading to learn more about the signs and treatments available for various fungal infections.

Book Clinical Practice of Medical Mycology in Asia

Download or read book Clinical Practice of Medical Mycology in Asia written by Arunaloke Chakrabarti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-16 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the unique epidemiology of fungal infections in Asia, illustrating that the situation in these countries is different from that in Western countries in terms of the causative species, natural history and management strategies. Asia, the world’s largest continent and home to more than half the global population, has conditions that favor the growth of many fungi, including a number of unique species. Further, socio-economic conditions such as overcrowding, compromised health care facilities and lack of awareness add to the morbidity and mortality due to fungal diseases in this part of the world. Since the majority of Asian countries do not have good diagnostic mycology laboratories, antifungal management is often based on experience. The limited data from Asian countries suggest a very high incidence of fungal infections. This book addresses epidemiology of fungal infections in general and specific populations of Asia, fungal allergy, and diagnosis and management in resource-limited environments. The book is must read for busy clinicians, microbiologists and critical care providers.

Book Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis

Download or read book Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis written by Gauri Mankekar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incidence of invasive fungal sinusitis has been increasing over the years. The understanding of its pathophysiology has improved with newer serological tests and diagnostic methods helping in earlier diagnosis and reducing patient morbidity. It was believed earlier that invasive fungal sinusitis is seen only in immune compromised patients but clinical reports suggest otherwise. More anti-fungal drugs are being added to improve incidence of patient survival. This book aims to compile all practical information about invasive fungal sinusitis into a single volume. Therefore, busy clinicians would not have to perform exhaustive literature studies to diagnose invasive fungal sinusitis. The book aims to provide an overview of diseases which could be mistaken for invasive fungal sinusitis and discuss how the management is different. Book sections consist of clinical, microbiological, serological, pathological, radiological and pharmacological features of the disease and its management. Each section is important in today’s context as it dynamically alters the management of the patient. Early clinical suspicion and rapid microbiological, pathological and radiological diagnosis with aggressive treatment with surgical debridement and medical therapy leads to favorable outcomes.

Download or read book Combating Fungal Infections written by Iqbal Ahmad and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-03 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungi are eukaryotic microorganisms that are closely related to humans at cellular level. Human fungal pathogens belong to various classes of fungi, mainly zygo- cetes, ascomycetes, basidiomycetes, and deuteromycetes. In recent years, fungal infections have dramatically increased as a result of improved diagnosis, high frequency of catheterization, instrumentation, etc. However, the main cause remains the increasing number of immunosuppressed patients, mostly because of HIV infection and indiscriminate usage of antineoplastic and immunosuppressive agents, broad-spectrum antibiotics and prosthetic devices, and grafts in clinical settings. Presently available means of combating fungal infections are still weak and clumsy compared to control of bacterial infection. The present scenario of antifungal therapy is still based on two classes of antifungal drugs (polyenes and azoles). These drugs are effective in many cases, but display toxicity and limited spectrum of ef?cacy. The recent trend towards emergence of drug-resistant isolates in the clinic is an additional problem. In recent years, a few new antifungal drugs have entered the clinics, but they are expected to undergo same fate as the older antifungal drugs. The application of fungal genomics offers an unparalleled opportunity to develop novel antifungal drugs. However, it is too early to expect any novel drugs, as the antifungal drug discovery program is in the stage of infancy. Interestingly, several novel antifungal drug targets have been identi?ed and validated.
