Book Laboratory Course in Invertebrate Zo loy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Course in Invertebrate Zo loy Classic Reprint written by Hermon C. Bumpus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Course in Invertebrate Zooloy IN the preparation of this book the author has had in mind the requirements of a class of students who are pursuing a course of laboratory work in Invertebrate Zoology. An effort has been made to direct the work, without, at the same time, actually telling the student all that there is to be learned from the specimen. It is taken for granted that an instructor is present to assist when there is trouble, and to demonstrate many things that written descriptions might only render more con fusing. The animals that have been selected are not always the most typical, but they are generally forms that can easily be secured and preserved. Book Laboratory Exercises in Invertebrate Zoology

Download or read book Laboratory Exercises in Invertebrate Zoology written by Alan Holyoak and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cost of textbooks and laboratory support materials has skyrocketed over the past few decades. A new copy of a laboratory manual in invertebrate zoology published by a textbook company can now cost over $100/copy. In my opinion this is just too expensive, especially when such a lab manual may be woefully out of date. That's why I developed a set of exercises several years ago to support my course in invertebrate zoology. When I learned about the CreateSpace self-publishing service I decided to make these exercises more broadly available (1st edition, 2013). In the meantime I solicited feedback from users and worked to review and update materials in these exercises in light of recent developments in the field. The 3rd Edition of Invertebrates by Brusca, et al. was released in winter 2016 and I decided to update all taxonomies and related material in the second edition of this set of laboratory exercises to conform with information in that textbook. This new edition includes a significant changes and improvements in many areas including the following:1) 82 pages of new material 2) 71 new figures (169 figures total)3) 46 links to supplemental video material on the anatomy or behavior of invertebrates4) A glossary of terms at the end of each chapter5) Updated and expanded taxonomic information for all groups following Invertebrates, 3rd Ed, by Brusca, et al., (2016) 6) Tables listing defining characteristics for major taxa are included in each chapter7) Inclusion of word roots/word meanings for many taxonomic names8) A taxonomic index replaces the cumbersome index of the 1st edition 9) Addition of a procedure for calibrating and using an ocular micrometer to the chapter on microscopy10) Replacement of the old overly complicated exercise on cladistics with a new streamlined exercise11) Addition of an entirely new chapter on Domain Eukarya including life cycles of pathogens. This chapter includes an introduction to Group Amoebozoa, Group Chromalveolata, Group Rhizaria, Group Excavata and Group Opisthokonta12) Addition or expansion of exercises on corals and siphonophores to the chapter on Cnidarians13) Addition of Phylum Ctenophora to the lab manual14) Addition of a larger number of nematode representatives, including Tubatrix and the pathogens Trichinella, Wuchereria, Enterobius, Dracunculus and Dirofilaria including their life cycles to the chapter on Phylum Nematoda 15) Addition of tardigrades, onychophorans and pycnogonids to the chapter on Panarthropoda17) New and expanded material on arachnids and myriapods in the chapter on Panarthropoda16) Addition of ophiuroids to the chapter on echinoderms. And, the price is still set with students in mind at only $20/copy for a hard copy version and even less for a Kindle version.

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of Invertebrate Zo logy written by Gilman A. Drew and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Invertebrate Zoölogy This manual has for its basis a set of laboratory directions prepared by the instructors in the Zoology Course given at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, for the use of students in that course. These manifolded outlines were first used in 1901. Associated with me in the preparation of the first notes were Dr. Robert W. Hall, Dr. James H. McGregor, Mr. Robert A. Budington, and Dr. Caswell Grave. For several years the notes were modified and additions were made before there was any thought of publication. During this period other instructors became members of the staff and added to the directions. These instructors were Dr. Winterton C.Curtis, Dr. D. H. Tennent, Dr. Otto C.Glaser, Dr. Grant Smith, Dr. John H.McClellen, and Dr. Lorande L. Woodruff. Since publication, the instructors in this course have offered many suggestions and criticisms that have aided greatly in revisions. I am especially indebted to Dr. Lorande L. Woodruff, who has given much attention to the revision of the Protozoa, and to Dr. Winterton C.Curtis, Dr. Caswell Grave, and Dr. W. C. Allee, who have successively been in charge of this course. Probably few instructors will find it desirable for their students to follow closely all that is given in this manual, but it has seemed better to arrange the matter in a logical order, and in some of the forms to call attention to only the important points of anatomy or adaptation, than to try to make the directions for each form complete in themselves. Since the first appearance of the manual in book form there have been many suggestions that directions for other forms be included, or that more complete directions be given for some of the forms treated. These suggestions have been followed in many cases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Biology of Invertebrate and Lower Vertebrate Collagens

Download or read book Biology of Invertebrate and Lower Vertebrate Collagens written by A. Bairati and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge in the field of the biology of the extracellular matrix, and in particular of collagen, has made considerable progress over the last ten years, especially in mammals, birds and ln man with respect to very important applied medical aspects. Basic knowledge in the animal kingdom overall has increased more slowly and haphazardly. We, therefore, considered it useful to organize a meeting specifically devoted to the study of the invertebrate and lower vertebrate collagens. The NATO Scientific Division financed an Advanced Research Workshop aimed at bringing together experts qualified in collagen biology (with morphological, biochemical and genetic specialization) with researchers who are currently studying collagenous tissues of invertebrates and lower vertebrates. The Medical-Biology Committee of the CNR-Rome and the University of Milan also supplied interest and support for the organization of this Meeting. The format of the workshop consisted in: 1) main lectures on the most recent aspects of collagen biology; 2) minireviews on the current knowledge of collagenous tissues in the various invertebrate phyla and in fish; 3) contributed papers on particular aspects of research in specific fields; 4) workshops on the methodology of studying collagen. As we had intended, the Workshop gave a comprehensive overview of acquired knowledge and of the present state of research actlvlty. It permitted wide interdisciplinary discussion, enabling collabora tions to be established and new research themes to be chosen. This volume contains the text of all the contributions presented at the Meeting, including posters.

Book A Research Review of Interventions to Increase the Persistence and Resilience of Coral Reefs

Download or read book A Research Review of Interventions to Increase the Persistence and Resilience of Coral Reefs written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coral reef declines have been recorded for all major tropical ocean basins since the 1980s, averaging approximately 30-50% reductions in reef cover globally. These losses are a result of numerous problems, including habitat destruction, pollution, overfishing, disease, and climate change. Greenhouse gas emissions and the associated increases in ocean temperature and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have been implicated in increased reports of coral bleaching, disease outbreaks, and ocean acidification (OA). For the hundreds of millions of people who depend on reefs for food or livelihoods, the thousands of communities that depend on reefs for wave protection, the people whose cultural practices are tied to reef resources, and the many economies that depend on reefs for fisheries or tourism, the health and maintenance of this major global ecosystem is crucial. A growing body of research on coral physiology, ecology, molecular biology, and responses to stress has revealed potential tools to increase coral resilience. Some of this knowledge is poised to provide practical interventions in the short-term, whereas other discoveries are poised to facilitate research that may later open the doors to additional interventions. A Research Review of Interventions to Increase the Persistence and Resilience of Coral Reefs reviews the state of science on genetic, ecological, and environmental interventions meant to enhance the persistence and resilience of coral reefs. The complex nature of corals and their associated microbiome lends itself to a wide range of possible approaches. This first report provides a summary of currently available information on the range of interventions present in the scientific literature and provides a basis for the forthcoming final report.
