Book Laboratory Column Technique for the Measurement of Colloid Transport in Variably saturated Porous Media

Download or read book Laboratory Column Technique for the Measurement of Colloid Transport in Variably saturated Porous Media written by Kelly Dean Cherrey and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniformly desaturated porous media. A coarse sand matrix which reached residual water content near 20 cm of water suction was used to verify the utility of the technique. Colloid suspensions were uniformly applied using a sprinkler with low dead volume, trivial concentration attenuation, and minimal nuisance dispersion. Unsaturated outflow suction was applied with a hanging water column through a 65 micron porous glass frit. Matric potential was measured along the column (internal diameter and length of 5 and 20 cm, respectively) at five locations. Transport breakthroughs were measured with a NaNO3 conservative tracer and two types of colloids: those removed from the matrix (native colloids) and those modified by a simulated Hanford tank-waste solution (Zhao et al., 2001). NaNO3 and colloid outflow concentrations were measured in real-time using absorbance spectroscopy. Average water content was determined from column weight and matric potential was measured using porous ceramic cups coupled with electronic strain-gage transducers. An effective saturation () design error of = 0.01 was easily verified during operation.

Book Colloid Transport and Attenuation in Saturated Porous Media

Download or read book Colloid Transport and Attenuation in Saturated Porous Media written by Xinyao Yang and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colloids refer to particles or macromolecules with at least one dimension of 1nm 1m. A wide range of environmental particles fall within this category including microorganisms, nanoparticles, and mineral precipitates. Understanding colloid fate and transport in porous medium not only permits more effective protection of water supplies, but also allows for the development of more effective pollutant remediation strategies. Organic matter (OM) complicates colloid behaviour. To date the influence of OM on colloid mobility in porous media has been largely qualitative. This book presents research leading to the development of multiple-pulse column techniques that may be integrated with mathematical models to quantify the effects of OM on particulate colloid attenuation in saturated porous medium. Research has investigated how two groups of environmental organic compounds, humic acids and proteins, influence particulate colloid attenuation by saturated sand. Study findings may shed light on complex colloidal behaviour in organic matter impacted environment and be useful to professionals in contaminant hydrogeology, environmental remediation, and wastewater treatment.

Book Exploring Colloid Transport in Unsaturated Porous Media Using X Ray Microtomography

Download or read book Exploring Colloid Transport in Unsaturated Porous Media Using X Ray Microtomography written by Chris L. Brueck and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the mechanisms controlling colloid transport and deposition in the vadose zone is an important step in protecting our water resources. Colloid transport in unsaturated porous media was studied using X-Ray Microtomography (XMT), which is a non-destructive imaging technique that provides three-dimensional images at a resolution on the order of 3 [micro]m/pixel. Under favorable attachment conditions, 5 -15 [micro]m hydrophobic silver coated hollow glass spheres were suspended and drained through sintered glass bead columns at flow rates of 0.5, 5.0 and 50.0 mL/hr. The results show that total colloid deposition was dependent on drainage flow rate and saturation. A positive correlation was found between the total colloid concentration and the number of trapped air bubbles. An image processing algorithm was written to assess the partitioning of colloids to the solid-water interfaces (SWIs), air-water interfaces (AWIs), and air-water-solid (AWS) contact lines, which led to the conclusion that at medium to high water contents, AWIs and AWS contact lines were equally important for colloid attachment and mobilization. Lastly, colloids were shown to be left behind the main drainage front, becoming immobilized in the disconnected wetting phase by attachment to SWIs, or in pendular wetting phase rings.
