Book Our Own Time

Download or read book Our Own Time written by David R. Roediger and published by Verso. This book was released on 1989-11-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Own Time retells the story of American labor by focusing on the politics of time and the movements for a shorter working day. It argues that the length of the working day has been the central issue for the American labor movement during its most vigorous periods of activity, uniting workers along lines of craft, gender and ethnicity. The authors hold that the workweek is likely again to take on increased significance as workers face the choice between a society based on free time and one based on alienated work and unemployment.

Book Managing Workforce Development in the 21st Century Global Reflections and Forward Thinking in the New Millennium

Download or read book Managing Workforce Development in the 21st Century Global Reflections and Forward Thinking in the New Millennium written by Henry O'Lawrence and published by Informing Science. This book was released on 2016 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with the premise that workforce education is a global issue and is becoming increasingly competitive. It is important for the reader to understand the concept of work historically, as well as its meaning and implications to individuals. Understanding this history leads to better instruction, education, and training, which can solve many human performance problems in the workplace. Workforce Education, Occupational, Training, Instruction or Career Education, Voca-tional Education or Technical Education is used interchangeably throughout this book. The concept of today’s workforce development is universal. As a college professor, I believe I have an ethical obligation to promote learning, to ensure health and safety, to protect the public and private trust, and to promote the transfer of learning. A second premise of this book is that there are common issues and problems in the workplace. This book provides, in a single volume, the knowledge base common to all work settings for today’s students, regardless of their specialty. Thus, the book was designed for students to think globally and to understand how to be and what it takes to be competitive in the global economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have traditionally interpreted the American land-grant higher-education movement as the result of political and economic forces. Little attention has been given, however, to any explicit or implicit theological motivations for the movement. This book tells the story of how the Christian belief of many founders of the University of Illinois motivated their educational theory and practice. Constructing a social gospel of labor's millennium (their shorthand for God's kingdom being enhanced through agricultural and mechanical education), they initially proposed that the university would impart a millenarian blessing for the larger society by providing abundant food, economic prosperity, vocational dignity, and a charitable spirit of sacred unity and public service. Rich in primary-source research, Smith's account builds a compelling case for at least one such institution's adaptation of an inherited evangelical educational tradition, transitioning into a new era of higher learning that has left its mark on university life today.

Book Education and the Arab World

This book was released on 1999-11-10 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What kind of world should we strive for in the next century? What roles will education and training play in creating such a world? With rapid technological advances and the arrival of the information age, education systems as well as labor markets have undergone tremendous changes, affecting not only curricula and teaching methodology, but also the nature of skills and competencies required of graduates and new entrants to a changing workforce in the twenty-first century. In this volume, leading scholars and practitioners unite in an effort to examine the importance of education in the development of nations in the new millennium. This volume is unique in that it engages in cross-national and cross-cultural studies ranging from Australia to Japan, Canada and the UAE. It also explores central concepts in education such as Total Quality Management and Just-in-Time Learning and provides an economist's view of how and in what form education and training influence growth. While the models for effective education may differ, it is undeniable that education is crucial for individual development and economic growth, national production, and building a strong civil society.

Book Worlds in Motion Understanding International Migration at the End of the Millennium

Download or read book Worlds in Motion Understanding International Migration at the End of the Millennium written by Douglas S. Massey and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1999-01-28 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the 20th century nearly all developed nations have become countries of immigration, absorbing growing numbers of immigrants not only from developed regions, byt increasingly from developing nations of the Third World. Although international migration has come to play a central role in the social, economic, and demographic dynamics of both immigrant-sending and immigrant-receiving countries, social scientist have been slow to construct a comprehensive theory to explain it. Efforts at theoretical explanation have been fragmented by disciplinary, geographic, and methodological boudaries. Worlds in Motion seeks to overcome these schisms to create a comprehensive theory of international migration for the next century. After explicating the various propositions and hypotheses of current theories, and identifying area of complementarity and conflict, the authors review empirical research emanting from each of the world's principal international migration systems: North America, Western Europe, the Gulf, Asia and the Pacific, and the Southern Cone of South America. Using data from the 1980s, levels and patterns of migration within each system are described to define their structure and organization. Specific studies are then comprehensively surveyed to evaluate the fundamental propositions of neoclassical economics, the new economics of labour migration, segmented labour market theory, world systems theory, social capital theory, and the theory of cumulative causation. The various theories are also tested by applying them to the relationship between international migration and economic development. Although certain theories seem to function more effectively in certain systems, all contain elements of truth supported by empirical research. The task of the theorist is thus to identify which theories are most effective in accounting for international migration in the world today, and what regional and national circumstances lead to a predominance of one theoretical mechanism over another. The book concludes by offering an empirically-grounded theoretical synthesis to serve as a guide for researchers and policy-makers in the 21st century.

Download or read book Living in the Millennium written by Marjrae Molskness and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Living in the Millennium" Why is the Millennium the neglected prophecy? Why were thousands of books written predicting who the anti-Christ might be, or trying to determine if we would be raptured at the beginning, the middle or end of the tribulation, or myriads of books about heaven itself? Why do we skip right over the Millennium? Revelation 20:6, "but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years." Ruling and reigning are verbs, what part of that did we not understand? The time line we crossed coming into this Millennium was not the finish line, only a new starting line. We, who entered the Millenniums as immortals, are given assignments, celebrate holiday feasts, attend courses given by prophets from every dispensation, ride giant turtles in the reconstructed Garden of Eden, formulate advances in all areas of science, and have joy unspeakable and full of glory. Pleasures are innumerable but our responsibilities and labors have not ended. We all know Isaiah 2:4, "and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks," which indicates the need for plowshares and pruning hooks, which indicates a time of labor, a time of labor that we misunderstood. There are many mortals who have also entered into this kingdom and King Jesus' reign. We are dwelling and reigning among these mortals, mortals that still need to accept the one and only way to obtain a place in the promised everlasting heaven. II Peter 3:12-13, "Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat. Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness." How will we be protected while the Almighty God accomplishes this monumental task, where and will he preserve the animal and plant life during this time of fire, like he did in Noah's time? Will we be able to witness this recreation? After being able to watch the first creation by heavenly recordings made at the beginning of time, the anticipation is almost overwhelming, waiting for this promise to be fulfilled. Luke 21:33, "And though all heaven and earth shall pass away, yet my words remain forever true." The Almighty God has promised us this newly created eternal dwelling place following this Millennium, and it will appear. His word remains forever true. This journal is filled with interesting submissions from numerous individuals around the world, from various cultures, different nations, diverse professions and from different age groups, each describing the circumstances surrounding their own journey into this distinct world. A world that sees King Jesus walking the hills of Judea once again, or strolling the streets of Trondheim, Norway, as well as helping students in classrooms interpret weather patterns, or encouraging musicians to master the new musical notes he has introduced. Why hasn't the New Jerusalem already descended, why would this Gracious Ruler still allow men and women to hunt for wild game, what is the Abyss and why is Satan cast into it for this short period of time, and not for all eternity? These are questions we explore in our journeys in the Millennium. We learn of insurrections by mortals that must be controlled by those of us ruling and reigning with Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The Eternal One who now sits upon his glorious throne, ruling with justice. We see millions of mortals, who have been born in this Millennium, still experiencing sorrow, tears, pain, yes and even death. Satan is bound but sin is still present because of self and the temptations of the world. Those things, in addition to time, will not be destroyed until the end of this Millennium. Book Love in the New Millennium

Download or read book Love in the New Millennium written by Can Xue and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most ambitious work of fiction by a writer widely considered the most important novelist working in China today In this darkly comic novel, a group of women inhabits a world of constant surveillance, where informants lurk in the flowerbeds and false reports fly. Conspiracies abound in a community that normalizes paranoia and suspicion. Some try to flee—whether to a mysterious gambling bordello or to ancestral homes that can only be reached underground through muddy caves, sewers, and tunnels. Others seek out the refuge of Nest County, where traditional Chinese herbal medicines can reshape or psychologically transport the self. Each life is circumscribed by buried secrets and transcendent delusions. Can Xue's masterful love stories for the new millennium trace love's many guises—satirical, tragic, transient, lasting, nebulous, and fulfilling—against a kaleidoscopic backdrop drawn from East and West of commerce and industry, fraud and exploitation, sex and romance.

Download or read book The Other War written by Lael Brainard and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004-05-13 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and the Center for Global Development publication The plight of the poorest around the world has been pushed to the forefront of America's international agenda for the first time in many years by the war on terrorism and the formidable challenges presented by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In March 2002, President Bush announced the creation of the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA). This bilateral development fund represents an increase of $5 billion per year over current assistance levels and establishes of a new agency to promote growth in reform-oriented developing countries. Amounting to a doubling of U.S. bilateral development aid—the largest increase in decades—the MCA offers a critical chance to deliberately shape the face that the United States presents to people in poor nations around the world. This book makes concrete recommendations on crafting a new blueprint for distributing and delivering aid to make the MCA an effective tool, not only in its own right, but also in transforming U.S. foreign aid and strengthening international aid cooperation more generally. The book tackles head on the tension between foreign policy and development goals that chronically afflicts U.S. foreign assistance; the danger of being dismissed as one more instance of the United States going it alone instead of buttressing international cooperation; and the risk of exacerbating confusion among the myriad overlapping U.S. policies, agencies, and programs targeted at developing nations, particularly USAID. In doing so, The Other War draws important lessons from new international development initiatives, such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, the mixed record of previous U.S. aid efforts, trends in the U.S. budget for foreign assistance, the agencies currently involved in administering U.S. development policy, and the importance of the relationship between Congress and the executive branch in determining aid outcomes. The MCA holds the promise of substantially increasing U.S. development assistance and piolicy, and the importance of the relationship between Congress and the executive branch in determining aid outcomes. The MCA holds the promise of substantially increasing U.S. development assistance and pioneering a new era in aid, but the authors caution against creating yet another example of wasted aid that could undermine political support for foreign assistance for decades to come.
