Book Wage Price Dynamics and Structural Reforms in Japan

Download or read book Wage Price Dynamics and Structural Reforms in Japan written by Davide Porcellacchia and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-02-10 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural reforms in the liquidity trap need not be deflationary. This paper develops a simple framework to study the role that key characteristics of Japan’s labor and product markets—labor-market duality and weak corporate governance—play in generating unfavorable wage-price dynamics. The model allows a discussion of whether and in what form structural reforms may contribute to Japan’s short-run goal of reflating the economy. It finds that boosting inflation with structural reforms implies an unusual trade-off with employment, that is an inverted Phillips curve. Simultaneous implementation of labor-market and product-market reforms is most effective in terms of reflating the economy.

Download or read book Work and Pay in Japan written by Robert A. Hart and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-08-05 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of Japanese labour market institutions and practices with respect to employment issues and labour payments. It contains extensive discussion of the effects of industrial relations, small business activity, business cycles and schooling on work and pay. An early chapter is devoted to presenting, in an accessible manner, essential labour market ideas and concepts that recur throughout the text. Important topics covered include (i) unions and wage determination, (ii) the breakdown of total labour costs, (iii) the Japanese bonus system, (iv) the employment life-cycle, (v) small businesses and subcontracting, (vi) pay and productivity over the business cycle. A key feature is that subject areas and themes are examined within a comparative United States/European framework. This allows assessments of whether or not the structure and performance of the Japanese labour market has differed from experience elsewhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper assesses the relationship between demographic trends and housing prices in Japan. Among various issues in the context of regional disparities, the paper focus on regional differences in population dynamics to try and understand to what extent demographic trends have influenced housing market prices in Japan in the past twenty years. Large cities, notably the Greater Tokyo area, are experiencing net migration inflows, while other regions are experiencing net migration outflows. Due to the durability of housing compared to other forms of investment, the magnitude of house price declines associated with population losses is larger than that of house price increases associated with population gains. These model-based predictions are likely to underestimate the actual fall in house prices associated with future population losses, as expectations of lower housing prices in the future could trigger more population outflows and disposal of houses, especially in rural areas. The paper suggests policy measures to help close regional disparities and avoid potential over-investment by taking account of demographic trends for housing supply.

Book Can the New Keynesian Phillips Curve Explain Japanese Inflation Dynamics

Download or read book Can the New Keynesian Phillips Curve Explain Japanese Inflation Dynamics written by Ichiro Muto and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We estimate a New Keynesian Phillips curve (NKPC) for Japan's economy. To obtain a better proxy of real marginal cost (RMC), we correct labor share by incorporating labor adjustment costs, material prices, and real wage rigidity. Our approach is unique in utilizing the information on firms' judgment about the labor gap, which implies the existence of labor adjustment costs. Our results show that the NKPC explains Japanese inflation dynamics quite well if we use the corrected proxy of RMC. Furthermore, we find that Japanese inflation persistence is mostly accounted for by the persistence of RMC itself rather than lagged inflation.--Publisher's description.

Book Inequality in the Workplace

Download or read book Inequality in the Workplace written by Jiyeoun Song and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past several decades have seen widespread reform of labor markets across advanced industrial countries, but most of the existing research on job security, wage bargaining, and social protection is based on the experience of the United States and Western Europe. In Inequality in the Workplace, Jiyeoun Song focuses on South Korea and Japan, which have advanced labor market reform and confronted the rapid rise of a split in labor markets between protected regular workers and underprotected and underpaid nonregular workers. The two countries have implemented very different strategies in response to the pressure to increase labor market flexibility during economic downturns. Japanese policy makers, Song finds, have relaxed the rules and regulations governing employment and working conditions for part-time, temporary, and fixed-term contract employees while retaining extensive protections for full-time permanent workers. In Korea, by contrast, politicians have weakened employment protections for all categories of workers. In her comprehensive survey of the politics of labor market reform in East Asia, Song argues that institutional features of the labor market shape the national trajectory of reform. More specifically, she shows how the institutional characteristics of the employment protection system and industrial relations, including the size and strength of labor unions, determine the choice between liberalization for the nonregular workforce and liberalization for all as well as the degree of labor market inequality in the process of reform.

Book Labor Markets and Firm Benefit Policies in Japan and the United States

Download or read book Labor Markets and Firm Benefit Policies in Japan and the United States written by Seiritsu Ogura and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the fourth to result from a remarkably productive collaboration between the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Japan Center for Economic Research, presents a selection of thirteen high-caliber papers addressing issues in the employment practices, labor markets, and health, benefit, and pension policies of the United States and Japan. After an opening chapter assessing the recent ascendance of the U.S. economy, papers diverge to tackle a range of specific issues. Focusing less on international comparison than on the assembly of high-quality research, contributors hone in on a variety of individual topics. Chapters delve into issues of youth employment, participatory employment, information sharing, fringe benefits, and drug coverage in Japan, as well as the dynamics of medical savings accounts, private insurance coverage, and benefit options in the U.S. Like previous volumes stemming from NBER/JCER collaboration, this book represents a valuable mass of empirical data on some of the most notable employment and benefits issues in each nation, information that will both anchor and provoke scholarly analysis of these topics well into the future.
