Book Labor and Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Labor and Democracy Classic Reprint written by William Lloyd Huggins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labor and Democracy In this little volume the author has endeavored to dis cuss in plain and concise language the relations between government and modern industrial conditions, to point out some of the dangers to democratic institutions inherent in the present labor movement, to carefully appraise the rights of labor, of capital and Of the public, to suggest legal principles upon which remedial legislation may be based and briefly to give the first results of an experiment in adjudicating industrial disputes. No attempt is made to exalt the Kansas Industrial Act, but on the contrary the analysis of that Act as found in these pages is intended only to describe an experiment which is being made by government to function in the preservation of thepublic peace, the protection of the public health, and the promo tion of the public welfare. The Kansas Industrial Law is an experiment in government and is not intended as a solution of a problem in sociology. It is based upon the idea that a duty rests upon government, to protect the general public from the evils of industrial warfare as well as from the evils of internecine strife or foreign invasion. Book Labor and Reconstruction in Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book Labor and Reconstruction in Europe Classic Reprint written by Elisha Michael Friedman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labor and Reconstruction in Europe The modern struggle for Democracy began with the demand of the nobles for the right to share with the king the privileges and responsibilities of government. That was followed by the middle or commercial classes insisting upon the same privilege. Later the workers demanded a voice in the affairs of state. By the middle of last century the people of the United States had achieved almost universal manhood suffrage. Since then those intrusted with the affairs of government have been responsible to all of the people for their acts rather than to any one group. But the change came so gradually and with so little of upheaval and conflict that it took the dangers and duties of a great world war to bring home to the masses of the people a full realization that they are the real power and final authority in a Democracy. Book Labor and Administration Classic Reprint

Download or read book Labor and Administration Classic Reprint written by John R. Commons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labor and Administration If Wisconsin dominates the book, it is because I can best speak of what I see and know in Wisconsin. Com ing to the state in 1904, La Follette, a leader who studied his subject, was just winning a ten-year battle for the people's control of their government. Six years later, the equally forceful Victor Berger led his class con scious wage-earners into a partial control of Mil waukee. Here both progressivism and socialism won their first notable victories in America. Here, too, was a unique university utilitarian, idealistic and free. Here investigation accompanied action. Here the people seem to think that democracy must be efficient if plutoc racy is to stay out. Surely, ten such interesting years in Wisconsin would be expected to color the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labor's Challenge to the Social Order: Democracy Its Own Critic and Educator It is from very able business men among these that we hear a new dialect. In all countries they note the flocking additions to trade unions and the still more momentous strengthening of these bodies by strategical alliances which may at any moment concentrate attack where the most vital public interests are at stake. The industrial technique of modern transportation furnishes this opportunity. To find among railways, longshoremen, trolleys, telegraph, tele phone, express and truck companies and in mines that labor is pooling its resources; to see why it does this; to see the weakening and even disappearance of the old local isolated craft union and the rise of a more class conscious organi zation, including scores of unions, is to see what is actually taking place. Not a country has escaped the threats of this new phalanx. An Australian journalist speaks for many coun tries in thus describing his own. Book American Labor and the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Labor and the War Classic Reprint written by Samuel Gompers and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Labor and the War It will remain for history to furnish an adequate evaluation of the services rendered to the cause of world democracy by Samuel Gompers during the great war. But we need not await history's verdict to know that this service has been of the most vital importance. The profound impress Samuel Gompers has made upon the current of world affairs during the most crucial period in modem history is apparent to all who are informed even in a casual way about day-to-day events. The labors of Mr. Gompers have been prodigious. In normal times his task was difficult enough. But when the United States entered the war his work was at once doubled and trebled and quadrupled. To his duties as president of the American Federation of Labor were added a multitude of duties in connection with war work - the great war work of the Federation itself, the post of chairman of the Committee on Labor, Advisory Commission of the Council of National Defense, president of the American Alliance for Labor and Democracy, and membership on committees almost without end. No man in America has more literally poured out the vital reserve of his spirit and physique than the leader of America's working men and women. Book Labour Social Reform and Democracy Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Labour Social Reform and Democracy Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by A. S. Rappoport and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labour, Social Reform and Democracy, Vol. 1 Hypocrisy are only equalled by the stupidity of the masses who believe them, that their only aim is the emancipation of labour and the introduction of an era of social equality and of true democracy. In the following pages I have made an attempt not only to give a sketch of the history of human social and economic suffering, but also to record the ideas on labour, social reform, and democracy propounded by the Apostles of Social Justice of all ages. The present volume brings up my sketch to the first centuries of the Christian era. The next volume will be devoted to the Middle Ages, the Reformation, the Renaissance, the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the French Revolution, and the first half of the nineteenth cen tury. The cry for justice has been uttered by numerous sociologists and philosophers, poets and prophets, but I am making a distinction between the true and false prophets. With the latter I am but little concerned, leaving them to the judgment of history, but from the teaching of the former, the reader, as I hope, may derive some benefit, inspiration, and consolation. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Politics of Labor W'hen Oliver Cromwell was at the height of his power as Protector Of the Commonwealth of England, an anonymous pamphlet appeared under the title of Killing no Murder which struck terror even into that strong sagacious soul by its menacing invective. Shall we, asked the writer, who would not suffer the lion to invade us, tamely stand and be devoured by the wolf? That is the question which now confronts the people of the American continent. Will the nation that defied kingly tyranny and overthrew the slaveholding aristocracy, tamely submit to see their institutions perverted, their blood-bought freedom destroyed, and a system of the meanest and most hateful class-supremacy established upon its ruins? To all human appearance we are on the verge of a. Great crisis. Political freedom cannot long eo-exist with industrial serfdom. The new wine of Democracy cannot be put into the old bottles of social inequality and caste privilege with out disaster. Book Socialism and Democracy in Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book Socialism and Democracy in Europe Classic Reprint written by Samuel Peter Orth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Democracy in Europe The workingman has taken an advanced place in the struggle for the democratization of industry. He has done so, first, through the organization of labor unions; secondly, through the development of political parties - labor parties. The blend of politics and eco momies which he affects is loosely called Socialism. The term is as indefinite in meaning as it is potent in influence. It has spread its unctuous doctrines over every industrial land, and its representatives sit in every important parliament, including our Congress. Such a movement requires careful consideration from every point of view. It is the object of this volume to trace briefly the growth of the movement in four leading European countries, and to attempt to determine the relation of economic and political Socialism to democracy - a question of peculiar interest to the friends of the American Republic at this time. Download or read book Text Book of Labor s Political Demands Classic Reprint written by American Federation of Labor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104 Book of Labor's Political Demands This is not a political handbook in the sense in which such books are published by the various political parties but rather a text book to aid in the dissemination of information on subjects which Labor considers of vital interest not only to the workers but to all classes of citizens. The presentation of Labor's Bill of Grievances on March 21st to the President of the United States, the President pro-tempore of the Senate and Speaker Cannon, was the first step in the present attempt to redress the grievances and regain the rights of which Labor has been deprived. As Congress utterly failed to grant the relief requested or accord the rights demanded it became necessary to appeal to the conscience and the support of our fellow citizens in order that Congressmen may be elected who will have a just regard for the rights of the workers and all classes of citizens and also that those who have proved themselves indifferent, negligent and hostile, may be defeated.
