Book Labor Allocation And Rural Development

Download or read book Labor Allocation And Rural Development written by Philip Guest and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By integrating migration research in a comprehensive framework of labour allocation at household and village levels, this study shows how migration factors are crucial in understanding the transformations of rural communities in developing countries. Data collected in 4 villages within a wet rice-growing area of Central Java, Indonesia, are used to examine why some villages and households contribute a greater share of migrants than others. The decision to migrate is located within the constraints and opportunities of local labour markets, and migration is treated as one among many alternatives for allocating the labour of household members. The type of labour allocation choices made is lined to the demographic structure of households, the social position of the household, and the employment opportunities available within the community. These factors are then related to processes of rural development.

This book was released on 2020-12-11 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Nepal, as in many developing countries, male outmigration from rural areas is significant and is rapidly transforming the sending communities. Using primary data collected from households in rural Nepali communities, this study analyzes the effects of male out-migration from rural agricultural areas on women’s and men’s work on and off the farm. Using an instrumental variable approach to correct for endogeneity related to outmigration, the study finds differential impacts on agricultural labor for the men and women who remain. Men reduce labor in non-farm work without significantly increasing their labor allocation to other activities. Women, on the other hand, increase their work on the farm taking on new responsibilities and moving from contributing family workers to primary farmers. Despite their growing roles as primary farmers, women in households with a migrant do not increase their work in higher value activities, and remain predominantly concentrated in producing staple grai

Book Left Behind to Farm Women s Labor Re Allocation in Rural China

Download or read book Left Behind to Farm Women s Labor Re Allocation in Rural China written by Ren Mu and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformation of work during China s rapid economic development is associated with a substantial but little noticed re-allocation of traditional farm labor among women, with some doing much less and some much more. This paper studies how the work, time allocation, and health of non-migrant women are affected by the out-migration of others in their household. The analysis finds that the women left behind are doing more farm work than would have otherwise been the case. There is also evidence that this is a persistent effect, and not just temporary re-allocation. For some types of women (notably older women), the labor re-allocation response comes out of their leisure.

Book Public Policy in Agriculture

Download or read book Public Policy in Agriculture written by Ashok K. Mishra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, developed countries have formulated public policies in agriculture ranging from supporting rural life and farm income to promoting sustainability of food and fibre production. Public Policy in Agriculture: Impact on Labor Supply and Household Income addresses the lack of empirical research in this area. It explores the impact of differing approaches to public policy through a series of international case studies, from the USA and Canada to South Korea, Norway, Slovenia and Taiwan. At a time when much of the developed world has been experiencing budget deficits and policy-makers and the public in general have re-opened the debate on public expenditures in the agricultural sector, this is a timely volume. Mishra, Viaggi and Gomez y Paloma have written an authoritative guide to agricultural public policy that will serve as a reference for academics, researchers, students, and policy-makers.
