Book Carp genetic resources for aquaculture in Asia

Download or read book Carp genetic resources for aquaculture in Asia written by David J. Penman and published by WorldFish. This book was released on 2005 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are over 1300 species of cyprinids in Asia, and these are utilized by people for food (capture fisheries and aquaculture) and as ornamental species. This publication focuses on cyprinid species that are bred in hatcheries and used in aquaculture and restocking activities. Introduced and threatened species of cyprinids in Asia are also discussed. We are well aware that we have not covered many other cyprinid species that are utilized by people in Asia in various ways: wild species in capture fisheries, self-recruiting species in aquaculture ponds and other water bodies, and aquarist species.

Book Roman Law and Latin Literature

Download or read book Roman Law and Latin Literature written by and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a long overdue appraisal of the dynamic interactions between Roman law and Latin literature. Despite there being periods of massive tectonic shifts in the legal and literary landscapes, the Republic and Empire of Rome have not until now been the focus of interdisciplinary study in this field. This volume brings vital new material to the attention of the law and literature movement. An interdisciplinary approach is at the heart of this volume: specialists in Roman law rarely engage in constructive dialogue with specialists in Latin literature and vice versa but this volume bridges that divide. It shows how literary scholars are eager to examine the importance of law in literature or the juridical nature of Latin literature, while Romanists are ready to embrace the interactions between literary and legal discourse. This collection capitalizes on the opportunity to open a fruitful dialogue between scholars of Latin literature and Roman law and thus makes a major, much-needed contribution to the growing field of law and literature.

Book The Alternative Augustan Age

  • Author : Kit Morrell
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA

  • ISBN : 0190901403

Download or read book The Alternative Augustan Age written by Kit Morrell and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The princeps Augustus (63 BCE - 14 CE), recognized as the first of the Roman emperors, looms large in the teaching and writing of Roman history. Major political, literary, and artistic developments alike are attributed to him. This book deliberately and provocatively shifts the focus off Augustus while still looking at events of his time. Contributors uncover the perspectives and contributions of a range of individuals other than the princeps. Not all thought they were living in the "Augustan Age." Not all took their cues from Augustus. In their self-display or ideas for reform, some anticipated Augustus. Others found ways to oppose him that also helped to shape the future of their community. The volume challenges the very idea of an "Augustan Age" by breaking down traditional turning points and showing the continuous experimentation and development of these years to be in continuity with earlier Roman culture. In showcasing absences of Augustus and giving other figures their due, the papers here make a seemingly familiar period startlingly new.

Book A review of the inland fisheries of India

Download or read book A review of the inland fisheries of India written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org. [Author] [Author]. This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has abundant water resources including rivers, canals, ponds, lakes, reservoirs, upland lakes, and floodplain wetlands covering over 5. [Author]8 percent of the country. [Author] These environments harbour a rich fish fauna of 1 035 species that constitutes the basis for the inland fisheries sector, which annually produces 2 144 452 tonnes of fish – if enhanced and culture-based fisheries are included – corresponding to 21 percent of total fish production. [Author] Rivers like the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Barak, alongside floodplain wetlands, play crucial roles, especially in the east and northeast. [Author] Lakes are abundant in upland areas. [Author] Reservoirs cover over 1 percent of India's land and hold untapped potential for fisheries development. [Author] Traditionally, fishing in inland water bodies has been a small-scale or subsistence activity. [Author] Fishing practices, crafts and gear used in inland fisheries are still traditional. [Author] Cooperative societies are present in reservoirs and wetlands giving fishers better bargaining power with traders and better prices for the fish. [Author] Inland fisheries are imperative for poverty alleviation, food security, gender empowerment, cultural services, ecosystem function, and biodiversity, and are important for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. [Author] Important threats to inland fisheries include water scarcity, habitat loss, pollution, climate change and invasive species. [Author] However, several major river conservation programmes have been initiated. [Author] The collection of inland fishery catch statistics remains weak and production appears to be significantly under-reported in many states. [Author] A simplified method for defining water bodies and estimating catch is proposed and all States have been advised to follow the same definition for water bodies. [Author]

Book Fish Karyotypes

  • Author : Ryoichi Arai
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Fish Karyotypes written by Ryoichi Arai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-26 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the largest group of extant vertebrates, fish offer an almost limitless number of striking examples of evolutionary adaptation to environmental and biotic selection pressure. The most diverse of all vertebrate groups, the higher taxa of fish traditionally have been classified by morphology and paleontology, with a much smaller input of cytogenetic information. DNA sequence data are exerting an increasingly strong influence on modern fish systematics, challenging the classification of numerous higher taxa ranging from genera to orders. The most fruitful approach, however, involves synthetic analyses of morphology, molecular phylogenetics, comparative karyology, and genome size. Karyotypes of more than 3400 species/subspecies are arranged here by fish systematics and include a list of genome size, sex chromosomes, B chromosomes, polyploidy, and locality of material fish, among others. This volume enables both beginners and advanced researchers to survey the existing literature and facilitates the implementation of an integrative approach to fish systematics. The first book on fish chromosomes in nearly 15 years, it is also the most comprehensive.
