Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation is a major challenge for economic development and social progress. Faced with the ecological and food problems that the world is currently experiencing, the legitimacy of innovation takes on its full meaning, particularly in developing countries. As emphasized by international organizations (UN, FAO), building skills and abilities in the agricultural and food sectors are necessary when launching innovation processes for the benefit of suffering populations. This book deals with different experiences launched in many developing countries in these sectors and shows how local initiatives can provide answers to the pessimism of experts and the media. Multidisciplinary analysis and practices explain how collective work creates value chains that can foster local and national economic development. The authors revisit the innovation agri-food models that contribute to economic development. Agri-Innovations and Development Challenges is composed of general presentations of innovations applied in developing countries, as well as specific studies on the joint valorization of knowledge and experience in agri-food engineering
Download or read book The Training and Visit Extension System written by Gershon Feder and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper analyzes several aspects of the operation and effects of the T & V extension system. Specific questions related to the supply of, and demand for, extension agents (VEW) visits, the presence or absence of farm size bias in VEW visits, seasonal and longer-term variations in the pattern of VEW visits, the relative importance of the VEW as a source of information to farmers, and the crop yields obtained by farmers in relation to their main sources of agricultural advice are addressed in detail. The paper draws the following main conclusions. Most (85 percent) contact farmers are visited regularly, and the majority of noncontact farmers also have some interaction with VEWs, suggesting that the supply of extension services is adequate. VEWs appear to be more active in the dry season than in the rainy season, which may be attributable to an emphasis on irrigated crop technology. As experience with the T & V system increases, contact farmers appear to receive fewer visits from VEWs, but visits to noncontact farmers increase. VEWs play a more important role as a disseminators of information in areas operating the T & V system than in areas relying on the older community development system of extension.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sub-Saharan Africa is a critical development priority-it has some of the world's poorest countries and during the past two decades the number of poor in the Region has doubled, to 300 million-more than 40 percent of the Region's population. Africa remains behind on most of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and is unlikely to reach them by 2015. With some of the world's poorest countries, Africa is a development priority for the donor community. A major drag on Africa's development is the underperformance of the critical agriculture sector, which has been neglected both by donors and governments over the past two decades. The sector faces a variety of constraints that are particular to agriculture in Africa and make its development a complex challenge. Poor governance and conflict in several countries further complicate matters. IEG has assessed the development effectiveness of World Bank assistance in addressing constraints to agricultural development in Africa over the period of fiscal 1991-2006.
Download or read book User Charges for Education written by Jee-Peng Tan and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investment in education is generally recognized as essential for a country's long term economic and social development. However, present macroeconomic conditions have limited allocation of public resources for education. Policymakers are seeking alternative sources of finance, one of which is the tapping of private household resources via user charges. This paper addresses two main issues involved in mobilizing resources by this method: (i) the ability and willingness of families to pay; and (ii) the possible expansion of enrollment that might be accomplished, given public budget constraints. The data on Malawi suggest the following: (i) a moderate fee increase is unlikely to precipitate a large dropout rate among students; (ii) excess demand will more than compensate for those students who do drop out due to the fee increase; and (iii) since fee increases will have a stronger impact on lower income families, they should be linked with equity measures such as scholarships.
