By revisiting Lionel Groulx’s 1962 work on the Quebec missionary experience from the standpoint of those who actually took part in it, this book gives readers a new vantage on a whole area of Quebec history even as it sheds light on a rich religious heritage, both tangible and intangible. Finally, this book is an opportunity for readers to reacquaint themselves with certain characteristics of societies within larger societies that enable them to foster the emergence of intercultural encounters and dialogue in a globalized context.

Louis Riel avait compris tout comme Jésus que la religion, surtout celle dont la tête est à Rome, était un esclavage épouvantable et qu'il fallait définitivement s'en séparer. C'est donc pour cette raison que le gouvernement de Sir John A. Macdonald pressé par les églises chrétiennes a trouvé le moyen de l'éliminer de cette terre malgré les protestations qui fusaient de toutes parts. Louis Riel devait donc subir le même sort que celui qui l'a inspirer, Jésus de Nazareth, et c'est exactement pourquoi je m'attends à la même conclusion, puisque je fais la même chose, c'est-à-dire, ouvrir les yeux du monde.

Important homme d’état, Michel de Marillac (1560-1632) served the French Crown as councillor in the Parlement de Paris, maître des requêtes under Henry IV, and conseiller du roi under Louis XIII. Become a conseiller d’état, he was named Surintendant des finances (from August 1624 to June 1626), then Garde des Sceaux until his disgrace in mid-November 1630, after the famous Day of Dupes. By his intelligence, energy, experience and probity, he was one of the most significant figures in the reign of Louis XIII. Marillac was the principal author of the Ordonnance de 1629, the largest ever codification of French law, which was known familiarly by his name: the “Code Michau”. Chief of the dévot party, he was among the most influential lay persons active in the establishment in France of the Reformed Carmelites (1602-1604), the Ursulines (1610) and the Oratorians (1611). He achieved one of the best translations of Thomas à Kempis’s Imitation of Christ and a translation of the Psalms, and was the author of several other scholarly works.
