Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. » Waldtraut Helene Treilles

Download or read book The Railway and Modernity written by Matthew Beaumont and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most research and writing on railway history has been undertaken in a way that disconnects it from the wider cultural milieu. Authors have been very effective at constructing specialist histories of transport, but have failed to register the railway's central importance in the representation and understanding of modernity. This book brings together contributions from a range of established scholars in a variety of disciplines with the central purpose of exploring the railway less as a transport technology than as a key signifier of capitalist modernity. It examines the complex social relations in which the railway became historically embedded, identifying it as a central problematic in the cultural experience of modernity. It avoids the limitations of both the close-sighted empiricism typical of many transport historians and the long-sighted generalizations of cultural commentators who view the railway merely as a shorthand for the concept of progress over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The book draws on a diverse range of materials, including literary and historical forms of representation. It is also informed by a creative application of various critical theories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1983, is a major contribution to our understanding of how and why French rural peasant society became modernised by radical changes in the communications system – in particular, the coming of the railways. The author argues that complex changes in the transport systems, and their effects on agricultural market structures, finally brought traditional French rural civilisation to an end. With the extension of commercialisation, and the widening of horizons, new economic and social structures – and changed attitudes – rapidly came into being. Writing as an economic historian, the author has adopted an interdisciplinary approach to this study which incorporates economic, sociological, historical and geographical methods and data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1975, The Economic Modernisation of France presents the study of economic developments in France between 1730 and 1880. This period is conceived as one of growth in production within pre-industrial economic structures, succeeded from 1840-50 by rapid structural transformation and the creation of an industrial economy. Divided into four major parts it discusses themes like communication and the development of commerce; agriculture; industrial development; and population. Rich in primary sources, this will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of French history, European history, economic history, and history in general.

Download or read book Changing France written by Anne Green and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Second Empire (1852-70) was a time of exceptionally rapid social, industrial and technological change. French literature also underwent fundamental changes during this period as writers embraced ‘modernity’ and incorporated new technologies, fashions and inventions into their work. Focusing on cultural areas such as exhibitions, transport, food, dress and photography, ‘Changing France’ shows how apparently trivial aspects of modern life provided Second Empire writers with a versatile means of thinking about deeper issues. This volume brings literature and material culture together to reveal how writing itself changed as writers recognised the extraordinarily rich possibilities of expression opened up to them by the changing material world.
