Book A History of Religious Ideas Volume 3

Download or read book A History of Religious Ideas Volume 3 written by Mircea Eliade and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conclusion of the three-volume history “rendered with the talent of one who is not only an academic writer but a novelist of considerable distinction” (David J. Levy, Times Higher Education Supplement). In A History of Religious Ideas. Mircea Eliade examines the movement of Jewish thought out of ancient Eurasia, the Christian transformation of the Mediterranean area and Europe, and the rise and diffusion of Islam from approximately the sixth through the seventeenth centuries. Eliade’s vast knowledge of past and present scholarship provides a synthesis that is unparalleled. In addition to reviewing recent interpretations of the individual traditions, he explores the interactions of the three religions and shows their continuing mutual influence to be subtle but unmistakable. As in his previous work, Eliade pays particular attention to heresies, folk beliefs, and cults of secret wisdom, such as alchemy and sorcery, and continues the discussion, begun in earlier volumes, of pre-Christian shamanistic practices in northern Europe and the syncretistic tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. These subcultures, he maintains, are as important as the better-known orthodoxies to a full understanding of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Acclaim for A History of Religious Ideas “Everyone who cares about the human adventure will find new information and new angles of vision.” —Martin E. Marty, The New York Times Book Review “The volumes would be worth buying for the critical bibliographies alone, but far more than this, they represent the culmination of years of impassioned scholarship.” —David J. Levy, Times Higher Education Supplement “This multivolume work should be an essential resource for generations to come.” —John Loudon, Parabola

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Followers of Muhammad b. ’Abd al-Wahhab, often considered to be Islam’s Martin Luther, shaped the political and religious identity of the Saudi state while also enabling the significant worldwide expansion of Salafist Islam. Studies of the movement he inspired, however, have often been limited by scholars’ insufficient access to key sources within Saudi Arabia. Nabil Mouline was granted rare interviews and admittance to important Saudi archives in preparation for this groundbreaking book, the first in-depth study of the Wahhabi religious movement from its founding to the modern day. Gleaning information from both written and oral sources and employing a multidisciplinary approach that combines history, sociology, and Islamic studies, Mouline presents a new reading of this movement that transcends the usual resort to polemics.

Book Structuring Conflict in the Arab World

Download or read book Structuring Conflict in the Arab World written by Ellen Lust-Okar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-10 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how ruling elites manage and manipulate their political opposition in the Middle East. In contrast to discussions of government-opposition relations that focus on how rulers either punish or co-opt opponents, this book focuses on the effect of institutional rules governing the opposition. It argues rules determining who is and is not allowed to participate in the formal political arena affect not only the relationships between opponents and the state, but also between various opposition groups. This affects the dynamics of opposition during prolonged economic crises. It also shapes the informal strategies that ruling elites use toward opponents. The argument is presented using a formal model of government-opposition relations. It is demonstrated in the cases of Egypt under Presidents Nasir, Sadat and Mubarek; Jordan under King Husayn; and Morocco under King Hasan II.

Book Islamic Masculinities

Download or read book Islamic Masculinities written by Lahoucine Ouzgane and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-02-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book outlines the great complexity, variety and difference of male identities in Islamic societies. From the Taliban orphanages of Afghanistan to the cafés of Morocco, from the experience of couples at infertility clinics in Egypt to that of Iraqi conscripts, it shows how the masculine gender is constructed and negotiated in the Islamic Ummah. It goes far beyond the traditional notion that Islamic masculinities are inseparable from the control of women, and shows how the relationship between spirituality and masculinity is experienced quite differently from the prevailing Western norms. Drawing on sources ranging from modern Arabic literature to discussions of Muhammad's virility and Abraham's paternity, it portrays ways of being in the world that intertwine with non-Western conceptions of duty to the family, the state and the divine.
