Book The Politics and Practice of Occupational Health and Safety Law Enforcement

Download or read book The Politics and Practice of Occupational Health and Safety Law Enforcement written by Diego Canciani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a critical approach to examining British and Italian occupational health and safety enforcement policies and questions the legal and political principles that underpin them. The book undertakes a comparative critical analysis of these two jurisdictions’ health and safety regulatory enforcement practices by focusing on the causes and consequences of the under-criminalisation of these crimes. It explores the fundamentals of these two jurisdictions' criminal justice systems and political practices, policies and traditions and exposes how these translate into pragmatic social inequality and injustice for victims of occupational health and safety crimes and, more generally, citizens. Findings are drawn from qualitative interviews conducted with front line occupational health and safety enforcement officers. This book offers an account of the challenges encountered when attempting to scrutinise public institutions responsible for policing crimes of the powerful. The comparison of the political and criminal justice system practices, polices and traditions of the British and Italian legal systems offer a valuable critical contribution to the anglophone literature on the subject and, more generally, on regulatory enforcement policies and practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the emergence and transformations of asbestos compensation to explore the wider issue of to what extent legal systems have converged in the era of globalization. Examining the mechanism by which asbestos compensation is delivered in Belgium, England, Italy and the United States, as well as the cultural forces and actors which contribute to its emergence and transformations, the book advances our understanding of how law operates within cultural norms, routines, and institutional relations of capitalist societies. With material gathered from 50 interviews and from primary and secondary sources, the author considers law as a cultural phenomenon, national styles of legal culture and the convergence and divergence of legal cultures, and law as a form of institutionalized power.

Book Regulating the Collaborative Economy in the European Union Digital Single Market

Download or read book Regulating the Collaborative Economy in the European Union Digital Single Market written by Marco Inglese and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically assesses how the rise of the collaborative economy in the European Union Digital Single Market is disrupting consolidated legal acquisitions, such as classical internal market categories, as well as the applicability of consumer protection, data protection, and labour and competition law. It argues that the collaborative economy will, sooner or later, require some sort of regulatory intervention from the European Union. This regulatory intervention, far from stifling innovation, will benefit online platforms, service providers and users by providing them with a clearer and more predictable environment in which to conduct their business. Although primarily intended for academics, this book also appeals to a wider readership, including, but not limited to, national and international regulators, private firms and lobbies as well as online platforms, consumer associations and trade unions.

Download or read book Risk Analysis VIII written by C. A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprised of the papers presented at the eighth, and latest, International Conference Simulation in Risk Analysis and Hazard Mitigation, this book covers a topic of increasing importance. Scientific knowledge is essential to our better understanding of risk. Natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, fires and others, have always affected human societies. Man-made hazards, however, played a comparatively small role until the industrial revolution when the risk of catastrophic events started to increase due to the rapid growth of new technologies and the urbanisation of populations. The interaction of natural and anthropogenic risks adds to the complexity of the problem.Due to advances in computational methods and the ability to model systems more precisely we can now quantify hazards, simulate their effects and calculate risk with greater accuracy, enabling us to manage risk much more effectively. These developments are particularly relevant to environmental issues, where substantial risks are involved. Governments, and their publics, now place a high priority on effective risk management and the mitigation of possible hazards. Covering topics such as: Estimation of Risk; Risk Management; Vulnerability; Geomorphologic Risk; Network Systems; Climate Change Risks; Hazard Prevention; Management and Control; Security and Public Safety; Transportation Safety; Safe Ship Operations; Early Warning Systems; Food Safety; Risk Perception; Natural Hazards; Technological Risk, the book will be of interest to planners, emergency managers, environmentalists, engineers, policy makers and other government officials, researchers and academics involved in the field of risk and disaster management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " . . . a distinct, broad, but compelling framework for examining a variety of laws and social policies." —Legal Studies Forum " . . . a very rich volume that has something to offer to many different tastes . . . an excellent companion to the main textbook in a large undergraduate law-and-society course." —Contemporary Sociology No issue has captured the imagination of social scientists and legal scholars more consistently than the creation of laws. The political implications of the study of law and society often create ideological diatribes with little attention to empirical detail. In this book, legal scholars, sociologists, political scientists, and anthropologists join in an attempt to develop and refine a structural theory of law.

Book Work Life Balance and the Economic Crisis

Download or read book Work Life Balance and the Economic Crisis written by Anthony Forsyth and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one can deny the significance attributed to the issue of reconciling work and private life by contemporary society, the EU and other international organisations. Its relevance is evident in the multifaceted nature of this topic and the need for each party to the employment contract to strike a proper balance between professional and personal responsibilities, based on the assumption that people can successfully harmonise their work with life. Following on from these considerations, this volume provides a detailed analysis of work-life balance and its regulation in a number of EU countries, emphasizing the consequences that the current economic crisis has brought about in this field.--

Book Family Law and Society in Europe from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Era

In addition, it explores specific topics related to marriage, such as the matrimonial property regime from a European comparative perspective, and impediments to marriage, such as bigamy. The book also addresses topics including family, society and European juridical science.

Book Core and Contingent Work in the European Union

Download or read book Core and Contingent Work in the European Union written by Edoardo Ales and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labour and social security law studies have addressed the topic of the decline of the standard employment relationship mainly from the point of view of the growing number of atypical relationships. Only a limited number of studies have examined the issue from the perspective of the differentiation between core and contingent work. Such an examination is necessary as the increase in contingent work leads to complicated legal questions which vary between European states depending on the type of contingent arrangements that have become most prevalent. This book analyses, using a comparative approach, these different types of contingency from a national and EU perspective touching on the work relationship from a labour as well as a social security point of view. The aim of the book is to identify and analyse those questions adopting an innovative approach and to put forward proposals for safeguarding social cohesion within undertakings and European society.

Book Risk Analysis Hazard Mitigation and Safety and Security Engineering XIII

Download or read book Risk Analysis Hazard Mitigation and Safety and Security Engineering XIII written by S. Hernandez and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2022-12-12 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research and industrial developments in the theoretical and practical aspects of safety and security engineering are the focus of this volume. This field, due to its special nature, is an interdisciplinary area of research and application that brings together, in a systematic way, many disciplines of engineering from the traditional to the most technologically advanced. The included papers, which were originally presented at the 13th Conference on Risk Analysis, Hazard Mitigation and Safety and Security Engineering, cover areas such as crisis management, security engineering, natural disasters and emergencies, terrorism, IT security, man-made hazards, pandemics, transportation security, protection and mitigation issues, among others. Also covered are various aspects of risk management and hazard mitigation, associated with both natural and anthropogenic hazards. Current events help to emphasise the importance of the analysis and management of risk to planners and researchers around the world. Natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, fires, epidemics, transportation, climate change, fake news and others have always affected human societies. The more recent emergence of the importance of man-made hazards is a consequence of the rapid technological advances made in the last few centuries. The interaction of natural and anthropogenic risks adds to the complexity of the problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collective volume “Modern Forms of Work. A European Comparative Study” evokes the intent to embody a reflection focused on modern labour law issues from a comparative perspective. A first set of essays contains national reports on modern forms of work. The second group contains some reflections regarding critical issues on digitalization, platforms and algorithms, analysing the different facets of the galaxy of digital work. The third group of essays flows into the section entitled “new balances and workers’ rights in the digital era”, a crucial topic in the debate. The complex of the writings, despite the diversity of approaches and methods, reveals the existence of a dense and inexhaustible dialogue between young scholars, at European and extra-European level. The analysis of new forms of work – the offspring of transnational processes of globalization and technologization – forms a fertile ground for experimenting a transnational dialogue on which young researchers can practice with excellent results, as this small volume confirms.
