Book excerpt: De nombreuses études se sont intéressées à la trousse d’urgence, mais majoritairement de façon quantitative, et principalement concernant sa composition. Le but de cette étude est de comprendre le contenu de la trousse médicale d’urgence des médecins généralistes, les facteurs influençant sa composition et la manière dont elle a évolué. Le choix s’est porté sur une étude qualitative par méthode des focus groups. Les résultats ont confirmé l’importance de certains facteurs comme l’environnement, la formation à la médecine d’urgence. Mais d’autres facteurs primordiaux ont été mis en évidence, jusqu’alors peu explorés : l’importance du caractère ainsi que du vécu personnel. La trousse apparaît donc comme le reflet de la personnalité du médecin qui la possède, et la seule trousse idéale finalement est celle qui lui est adapté. La tendance actuelle à l’allègement a aussi été retrouvée, expliquée en grande partie par l’évolution des pratiques avec l’apparition du SMUR et la régulation par le 15. Nous constatons également une carence sur le plan légal puisqu’actuellement aucun texte de loi n’encadre la composition ni même la possession d’une trousse d’urgence pour le médecin généraliste. Le flou concernant la loi et la peur de la responsabilité médico-légale apparaissent comme des préoccupations essentielles aux yeux des médecins. La rédaction de recommandations claires de la part des autorités de santé sur les obligations médico-légales concernant la trousse d’urgence des généralistes, des formations sur les gestes pratiques d’urgence, la création d’une trousse commune dans les cabinets de groupe nous semblent intéressants pour améliorer cette trousse médicale d’urgence, tout comme la création de maisons médicales de garde.

The most common strategy for addressing this kind of transgression relies on policing and prisons. But through examining commonly accepted typologies of high-risk intimate partner violence, Ardath Whynacht shows that policing can be understood as part of the same root problem as the violence it seeks to mend and provides an abolitionist frame for the most dangerous forms of intimate partner violence. This book illustrates that the origins of both the carceral state and toxic masculinity are situated in settler colonialism and racial capitalism and sees police homicide and domestic homicide as akin. Describing an experience of domestic homicide in her community and providing a deeply personal analysis of some of the most recent cases of homicide in Canada, the author inhabits the complexity of seeking abolitionist justice. Insurgent Love traces the major risk factors for domestic homicide within the structures of racial capitalism and suggests transformative, anti-capitalist, anti-racist, feminist approaches for safety, prevention and justice.

Today, a fully vaccinated child will have received nearly three dozen vaccinations between birth and age six. Along with the increase in number has come a growing wave of concern among parents about the unintended side effects of vaccines. In Vaccine, Mark A. Largent explains the history of the debate and identifies issues that parents, pediatricians, politicians, and public health officials must address. Nearly 40% of American parents report that they delay or refuse a recommended vaccine for their children. Despite assurances from every mainstream scientific and medical institution, parents continue to be haunted by the question of whether vaccines cause autism. In response, health officials herald vaccines as both safe and vital to the public's health and put programs and regulations in place to encourage parents to follow the recommended vaccine schedule. The significant, and often negative, consequences due to the problem of social stratification are discussed in relation to the educational and occupational careers of educated youth. The subject is introduced by noting linkage between education and employment, egalitarian policies in education, and a historical perspective. Egalitarian philosophies in education are considered along with aspects of the equality problem relevant to developing countries. The role of formal education as a social stratifier is explored. A comparative perspective on education and social stratification in developing countries as well as differences between developed and developing countries with regard to social stratification are offered. Information is included on university graduates in developing countries focused on social background and social destination. Among the conclusions are: social stratification in all societies is enhanced by competition, selectivity and a meritocratic reward system; because institutions of higher education in developing countries serve subsistence economies with a limited modern sector, their post-primary enrollment patterns have no historical parallel in the developed economies; and home background in third-world countries tends to have less impact on access, survival, and outcomes of secondary and higher education than in industrialized countries.
