Book excerpt: Between 1750 and his death in 1781, the Marquis de Marigny?brother of Madame de Pompadour, courtier to Louis XV, and one of eighteenth-century France's important patrons of art and architecture?amassed a collection that was broad in scope, progressive in taste, and exceptional in quality and provenance. This book offers a transcription of the exhaustive inventory of Marigny's estate together with an essay in which Alden R. Book The French Language in the Seventeenth Century

Download or read book The French Language in the Seventeenth Century written by Peter Rickard and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1992 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixty French texts edited here are all direct commentaries, by contemporary authors, on the French language in the 17th century. By this time, French had begun to assert its independence; in its written and printed form it was being used for a wide variety of literary, technical and administrative purposes. Its practitioners not only successfully challenged the hitherto dominant position of Latin, but also began, for the first time, to discuss and analyse for its own sake the language which was now their preferred medium for expression -- hence, in the first half of the seventeenth century, a growing number of publications on the nature and characteristics of French. The texts demonstrate the sustained critical preoccupationwith the welfare of the French language in the 17th century, and illustrate the various ways in which the writers of the age contributed to its development as an instrument of literary expression and social intercourse.

Book Grammar as a Window Onto Arabic Humanism

Download or read book Grammar as a Window Onto Arabic Humanism written by M. G. Carter and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2006 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of these articles dedicated to Michael G. Carter address aspects of Classical Arabic grammar. Ramzi Baalbaki discusses Mu'addib's treatise Daqa-'iq al-Tas.rif. Kees Versteegh considers questions of the government of 'inna in a treatise by the grammarian al-Warraq. Yasir Suleiman considers the fierce extra-linguistic debates which took place in the wake of two recent publications provocatively featuring Sibawayhi's name in the title. Pierre Larcher treats questions of authenticity surrounding a longish quotation from al-Farabi's Kitab al-'alfaz wa-l-huruf. Adrian Gully addresses the relationship between two important treatises on syntax and rhetoric from the eighth and sixth centuries AH respectively. Georges Bohas and Abderrahim Saguer consider the extent to which Arabic roots display a biliteral core which can be assigned a fairly constant semantic value. James Dickins provides an in-depth analysis of the system of verbal diatheses in Central Urban Sudanese Arabic. Werner Diem investigates the euphemistic use of the root lhq in its first and fourth forms to refer to death. Ronak Husni and Janet Watson analyse typical patterns of errors in Arabic essays written by English-speaking learners of Arabic. Finally, in a case study of the medieval translations of Aristotle's Poetics, Lutz Edzard and Adolf Kohnken look at the central status of Arabic for the transmission of Classical knowledge.

Book Life and Death on the Plantations

Download or read book Life and Death on the Plantations written by Michael Harrigan and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first half of the seventeenth century, missionaries of the Society of Jesus ministered to the free and enslaved populations of the French Caribbean colonies. Amongst their number were Jean Mongin (1637–1698) and Claude Breban (1695–1735), whose letters vividly depict the experience of the evolving colonial world. Writing from Martinique, and Saint Kitts (Saint-Christophe), Mongin describes his attempts to convert Protestants, his ministry to the populations of slaves and their mistreatment by colonists, as well as concerns with unorthodox spiritualities. Breban depicts the rhythms of life in the burgeoning slave colony of Saint-Domingue, with the distinctive cultural and linguistic practices – and cruelty – of its plantation environment. Mongin and Breban’s letters reflect debates about the transatlantic slave trade, and the nature of human difference, and testify to the cultural and social environment of early Creole societies. The letters in this volume are an unrivalled source of information about the lives of enslaved people in the early modern French Caribbean. Transcriptions of manuscripts in French are accompanied by facing-page translations into English and notes.
