Book excerpt: These articles are mainly concerned with medieval French literature, particularly those areas in which the honorand of the volume, Rupert T. Pickens, has distinguished himself: Old French Arthurian romance, Marie de France, chanson de geste, later poetry (including Villon), and the Occitan troubadour lyric. Among the contributors are some of the most significant scholars from the U.S.A., Canada, France, Switzerland, and the U.K. working in Old French studies today. Some of the articles deal with relatively unknown works, and all are informed by current developments in medieval literary studies

Book Sixteenth Century French Poetry

Download or read book Sixteenth Century French Poetry written by Victor E Graham and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1964-12-15 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this anthology an effort has been made to include representative selections from the most significant sixteenth-century French poets. With the exception if a few longer works (mainly those of Ronsard, Du Bartas, and D'Aubigné), poems are given complete. In addition, the original spelling and punctuation have been retained as far as possible, except for the usual editorial modifications (differentiation of u and v, i and j, the addition of accents à, où, replacement of & by et, and so on). The sixteenth century is a period of tremendous poetic activity. It is a period closer in spirit to us in many ways than the intervening centuries, particularly the seventeenth and the eighteenth. Its poetry is still being rediscovered and re-assessed in a way that is just as exciting as the period of foment during which it was written.

Book The Life of Irene Nemirovsky

Download or read book The Life of Irene Nemirovsky written by Olivier Philipponnat and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2010-05-04 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major biography of the author of Suite Française The posthumous publication of Suite Française won Irène Némirovsky international acclaim and brought millions of readers to her work. But the story of her own life was no less dramatic and moving than her most powerful fiction. With her family, she escaped Russia in 1919 and settled in Paris, where she met and married fellow Jewish émigré Michel Epstein. In 1929 she published her highly acclaimed and controversial novel David Golder, the first of many successful books that established her stellar reputation. But when France fell to the Nazis, her renown did her little good: without French citizenship, she was forced to seek refuge in a small Burgundy village with her husband and their two young daughters. And in July 1942 Némirovsky was arrested and deported to Auschwitz, where she died the following month. Drawing on Némirovsky’s diaries, previously untapped archival material, and interviews, her biographers give us at once an intimate picture of her life and turbulent times and an illuminating examination of the ways in which she used the details of her remarkable life to create “some of the greatest, most humane, and incisive fiction [World War II] has produced” (The New York Times Book Review).
