Dans ce cadre, la surveillance biologique des expositions professionnelles (SBEP) peut s'avérer indispensable à l'évaluation et au suivi des risques sanitaires. Cependant, le recours à cet outil par les médecins du travail reste marginal au regard du nombre de travailleurs qui pourraient en bénéficier. Méthodes : des analyses descriptives et univariées ont été réalisées sur les réponses issues de 55 questionnaires retenus pour leur représentativité. Les objectifs étaient d'identifier les déterminants liés à la prescription de la SBEP par les médecins du travail bretons, les principaux freins pouvant les entraver ainsi que décrire leurs pratiques sur le terrain. Résultats : il a été montré qu'une formation solide en toxicologie et la figure professionnelle du référent toxicologue non médecin sont des variables significativement associées à la réalisation et au bon déroulement des actions. Le manque de compétences est le frein premier, suivi par le manque d'une démarche protocolisée puis par le manque de collaboration de la part des entreprises à égalité avec manque de temps. Conclusion : afin de pouvoir limiter l'abstention à la pratique de la SBEP par les médecins du travail, des suggestions d'amélioration ont été proposées en mettant en avant la poursuite d'une cohésion solide avec tous les professionnels impliqués.

Book excerpt: The 2018 FAO-OIE-WHO (Tripartite) zoonoses guide, “Taking A Multisectoral, One Health Approach: A Tripartite Guide to Addressing Zoonotic Diseases in Countries” (2018 TZG) is being jointly developed to provide member countries with practical guidance on OH approaches to build national mechanisms for multisectoral coordination, communication, and collaboration to address zoonotic disease threats at the animal-human-environment interface. The 2018 TZG updates and expands on the guidance in the one previous jointly-developed, zoonoses-specific guidance document: the 2008 Tripartite “Zoonotic Diseases: A Guide to Establishing Collaboration between Animal and Human Health Sectors at the Country Level”, developed in WHO South-East Asia Region and Western Pacific Region. The 2018 TZG supports building by countries of the resilience and capacity to address emerging and endemic zoonotic diseases such as avian influenza, rabies, Ebola, and Rift Valley fever, as well as food-borne diseases and antimicrobial resistance, and to minimize their impacts on health, livelihoods, and economies. It additionally supports country efforts to implement WHO International Health Regulations (2005) and OIE international standards, to address gaps identified through external and internal health system evaluations, and to achieve targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The 2018 TZG provides relevant country ministries and agencies with lessons learned and good practices identified from country-level experiences in taking OH approaches for preparedness, prevention, detection and response to zoonotic disease threats, and provides guidance on multisectoral communication, coordination, and collaboration. It informs on regional and country-level OH activities and relevant unisectoral and multisectoral tools available for countries to use.

Benzoic acid is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of several compounds, including phenol and caprolactam. The compound is increasingly used in the production of diethylene and dipropylene glycol dibenzoate plasticizers in adhesive formulations, and to improve the properties of alkyd resins for paints and coatings. Most releases of benzoic acid and sodium benzoate into the environment result from their use as preservatives in food, beverages, mouthwashes, dentifrices, and cosmetics. For sodium benzoate, the largest use is as an anticorrosive added to antifreeze coolants. Processed foodstuffs and soft drinks are considered the main sources of exposure for the general population. Concerning behavior in the environment, both compounds are readily biodegraded under aerobic conditions and are unlikely to bioaccumulate. In laboratory animals, exposure to high concentrations caused weight gain and adverse effects on the central nervous system, liver, and kidney. While data are limited, studies suggest that the compounds do not cause adverse effects on development or reproduction and are not carcinogenic. In humans, reports of adverse effects are largely confined to cases of urticaria, asthma, rhinitis, and anaphylactic shock following oral, dermal, or inhalation exposure to these compounds, including for medical purposes. No evaluation of long-term effects on health was possible in view of the limited data available
