Book The Brill Dictionary of Gregory of Nyssa

Download or read book The Brill Dictionary of Gregory of Nyssa written by Lucas Francisco Mateo Seco and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brill Dictionary of Gregory of Nyssa is the fruit of wide-ranging collaboration between experts in Philology, Philosophy, History and Theology. These scholars shared the desire to develop a comprehensive reference work that would help attract more people to the tudy of the 'Father of Fathers' and assist them in their work. Gregory of Nyssa's thought is at once quintessentially classic and modern, as it speaks directly to the contemporary reader. As interest in Gregory has increased along with the number of works devoted to him, the need for a comprehensive introduction and bibliographical reference work has arisen. In order to meet this need, more than forty scholars from various disciplines and perspectives have contributed to this work. In two hundred articles, the Brill Dictionary of Gregory of Nyssa provides a symphonic vision of the studies on Gregory of Nyssa and his thought.

Book Text Linguistics and Classical Studies

Download or read book Text Linguistics and Classical Studies written by Mauro Giuffrè and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work represents a significant scientific advancement on text linguistics from three different viewpoints. The first chapter provides an overview of the history of text linguistics from a broader perspective than usual, offering a complete reference framework. The second chapter presents the procedural approach to the study of text linguistics in a concise way, including a critical comparison with other perspectives. The third chapter constructs a very unusual bridge between theoretical linguistics and classical studies in that it takes a literary text in Latin from the early imperial period as its case study. This combination is rare, as theoretical linguists are usually oriented to modern languages and classicists are not generally inclined to the study of formal linguistics. It also offers an interesting perspective that intersects the studies of general linguistics and glottology, which makes this volume of interest to general linguists, classicists, philologists and literary critics alike.

This book was released on 1993-03-22 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It's the first book which revisits Greek and Latin theories of signs from the point of view of a profound classical scholarship and a paramount knowledge of contemporary semiotics debates."Â -- Umberto Eco Available in English for the first time is Professor Manetti's brilliant study of the origin of semiotics and sign theory. In the "classical" tradition he sees a concept of the sign which is significantly different from that currently in use.

Book Frege on Language Logic and Psychology

Download or read book Frege on Language Logic and Psychology written by Eva Picardi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eva Picardi (1948-2017) was one of the most influential Italian analytic philosophers of her generation. She taught for forty years at the University of Bologna, raising three generations of students. This volume presents a selection of Picardi's essays on Frege's philosophy of logic, language, and psychology. Together, these papers provide a close look at the milieu within which Frege operated, and serve to highlight the relevance of his work for contemporary debates, particularly in the philosophy of language. One strand in Picardi's work on Frege concerns understanding and contextualizing Frege's anti-psychologism. Picardi contends that Frege was motivated by semantic considerations, much more so than by adherence to Kantian transcendentalism. Furthermore, Picardi draws on her deep knowledge of German, and the fact that she was a native speaker of Italian, to reconstruct the intricacies of Frege's relationship with other logicians of his time-both in Germany, like Kerry and Sigwart, and in Italy, like Peano and his school. Picardi's work shows how the historical and the theoretical (typically treated as separate in contemporary analytic philosophy, even in competition), complement and enrich one another.

Book Manipulation and Ideologies in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Manipulation and Ideologies in the Twentieth Century written by Louis de Saussure and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-22 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of 12 papers dealing with manipulation and ideology in the 20th century, mostly with reference to political speeches by the leaders of major totalitarian regimes, but also addressing propaganda within contemporary right-wing populism and western ideological rhetoric. This book aims at bringing together researchers in the field of ideology reproduction in order to better understand the underlying mechanisms of speaker-favourable belief inculcation through language use. The book covers a wide range of theoretical perspectives, from psychosocial approaches and discourse analysis to semantics and cognitive linguistics and pragmatics. The book’s central concern is to provide not only a reference work with up-to-date information on the analysis of manipulation in discourse but also a number of tools for the scholar, some of them being developed within theories originally not designed to address belief-change through language interpretation. Foreword by Frans van Eemeren.
