Sa création en 1902 faisait écho aux préoccupations linguistiques d'alors, héritées pour l'essentiel du XIXe siècle. Très vite elle s'est imposée comme l'autorité linguistique et littéraire dominante au Canada français, et elle le demeurera pendant toute la première moitié du XXe. Curieusement, l'ensemble de son oeuvre, l'ampleur et la diversité de ses actions n'avaient fait l'objet d'aucune étude détaillée ; elles méritaient qu'à l'occasion du centenaire de sa fondation un spécialiste vienne en rappeler l'importance. Vouée à l'étude et au perfectionnement de la langue canadienne, la Société est à l'origine de vastes travaux et de nombreuses publications. Mais c'est bien avec son Glossaire (1930) qu'elle a le plus contribué à la mise en valeur du patrimoine québécois. La monographie de Louis Mercier est capitale pour connaître et comprendre les ressources que le Glossaire est en mesure d'apporter à l'histoire et à la recherche. En reconstituant l'histoire complète de l'entreprise, il ne laisse dans l'ombre aucun aspect de la genèse du répertoire. Nous lui sommes redevables d'une analyse méticuleuse et passionnante qui aurait pu être austère mais qui est en fait vivante et chaleureuse. Il a su nous rendre cette aventure presque familière et nous faire partager son admiration pour tous les protagonistes.

Avec le concours de l'élite intellectuelle de l'époque, la Société du parler français au Canada a réalisé de grands projets linguistiques. Ses activités se sont poursuivies jusqu'au début des années 1960 et ses travaux ont été largement diffusés. Dans le but de célébrer le 100e anniversaire de fondation de la Société, lequel coïncidait avec le 150e de l'Université Laval, le Laboratoire de lexicologie et lexicographie québécoises (Université Laval, Université de Sherbrooke et Université du Québec à Chicoutimi), a organisé un colloque à Québec le 25 octobre 2002. Cette rencontre, tenue au Musée de la civilisation sous la présidence d'honneur du Professeur Bernard Quemada, a été l'occasion de rappeler ce qu'a été la Société du parler français au Canada et le rôle exceptionnel qu'elle a joué dans la mise en valeur du patrimoine culturel québécois.
