"La situation de l'alimentation et de l'agriculture 2005" examine les nombreuses facons dont le commerce international et sa liberalisation affectent les populations demunies vivant dans l'insecurite alimentaire. La conclusion est que le commerce joue un role de catalyseur en creant des conditions permettant aux pauvres d'ameliorer leurs revenus et de vivre une vie plus saine et plus productive. Mais parce que les pauvres survivent souvent dans une extreme precarite, ils sont particulierement exposes en cas de reforme, notamment a court terme, au moment ou les secteurs de production et le marche du travail doivent s'adapter. L'ouverture des marches agricoles nationaux a la concurrence internationale - notamment de la part de concurrents subventionnes - avant que les institutions et les infrastructures commerciales de base ne soient mises en place peut fragiliser l e secteur agricole et avoir des consequences negatives a long terme sur la situation economique et la securite alimentaire. De cette analyse, il ressort, parmi beaucoup d'autres lecons importantes, que les responsables politiques doivent examiner avec soin comment les politiques commerciales et les politiques complementaires peuvent etre utilisees pour promouvoir une croissance favorable aux plus pauvres. Le rapport recommande une approche, a savoir d'investir dans le capital humain, les institutions et l'infrastructure pour permettre aux pauvres de tirer parti des possibilites offertes par le commerce international, tout en mettant en place des filets de securite pour proteger les membres de la societe les plus vulnerables. Prepared through a participatory, country-driven process, the report draws on information from 91 country reports to provide a description of the roles and importance of biodiversity for food and agriculture, the drivers of change affecting it and its current status and trends. It describes the state of efforts to promote the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity for food and agriculture, including through the development of supporting policies, legal frameworks, institutions and capacities. The report complements other global assessments prepared under the auspices of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, which have focused on the state of genetic resources within particular sectors of food and agriculture.

The State of the World’s Aquatic Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture is the first ever global assessment of these resources, with the scope of this first Report being limited to cultured AqGR and their wild relatives, within national jurisdiction. The Report draws on 92 reports from FAO member countries and five specially commissioned thematic background studies. The reporting countries are responsible for 96 percent of global aquaculture production. The Report sets the context with a review of the state of world’s aquaculture and fisheries and includes overviews of the uses and exchanges of AqGR, the drivers and trends impacting AqGR and the extent of ex situ and in situ conservation efforts. The Report also investigates the roles of stakeholders in AqGR and the levels of activity in research, education, training and extension, and reviews national policies and the levels of regional and international cooperation on AqGR. Finally, needs and challenges are assessed in the context of the findings from the data collected from the countries. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation. To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world. In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.
