Book excerpt: This book explores the issue of ecclesiastical authority in Romanesque sculpture on the portals and other sculpted “gateways” of churches in the north Italian region of Lombardy. Gillian B. Elliott examines the liturgical connection between the ciborium over the altar (the most sacred threshold inside the church), and the sculpted portals that appeared on church exteriors in medieval Lombardy. In cities such as Milan, Civate, Como, and Pavia, the liturgy of Saint Ambrose was practiced as an alternative to the Roman liturgy and the churches were constructed to respond to the needs of Ambrosian liturgy. Not only do the Romanesque churches in these places correspond stylistically and iconographically, but they were also linked politically in an era of intense struggle for ultimate regional authority. The book considers liturgical and artistic links between interior church furnishings and exterior church sculptural programs, and also applies new spatial methodologies to the interior and exterior of churches in Lombardy. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, medieval studies, architectural history, and religious studies.

Book excerpt: Through the study of more than twenty novels produced in Spain from the 1840s to the 1920s, this book explores the literary means by which the social options available to modern Spanish bourgeois citizens were discursively constructed, occasionally before and often concomitantly to their production in reality. As a result, this study is concerned with the interplay of realism and reality in modern Spain. From the earliest folletines of the 1840s to the Modernist novels of the 1920s, the majority of novels written in this eighty-year period are what one might term novelas de costumbres contempor neas, or novels of contemporary customs, and therefore primarily concerned with faithfully copying and moreover influencing real social norms in the public sphere. In these pages, I argue that the spatial and behavioral discourses in the novels of contemporary customs offer a telling history of the evolving formulation of the Spanish bourgeoisie. The linking of novels and urbanism is hardly arbitrary in the context of nineteenth-century Spain. Urbanism, particularly in the nineteenth century, was as much a verbal construction as the novel, as proven by the lengthy treatises of such prominent Spanish bureaucrats, engineers, architects, and urban planners as Ram n de Mesonero Romanos, Ildefons Cerd and Carlos Mar a de Castro. For Spanish intellectuals of this era, city planning and the novel functioned as parallel, enmeshed discourses in which to work out what it meant to be middle class and the roles this class ought to play in contemporary society. In this way, they can be considered associated fields of discourse, in the sense described by Michel Foucault in The Archaeology of Knowledge. Foucault's treatise was a call for scholars to reexamine historical fields and question the historical grouping of knowledge(s) into certain discursive unities, and consider whether these might be broken up and new ones conceived. In this vein, this book undertakes a broader and more integrative view of the Spanish nineteenth century, calling into question the boundaries of fields such as etiquette and urban planning, or literature and touristic discourse.

So scratch the third thing I said—a lot of love and sex. And the thing about the explicit, the sex is kind of explicit, kind of implied, but oftentimes very explicit all without the use of an explicit word such as . . . (well, they probably wouldn’t want me to write an explicit word on the cover). It’s poetry. Erotic poetry, I suppose. But that’s my favorite genre of poetry, when you read something after or during a bath and start to massage your nape and dream and still feel clean afterward. Two comedic poems, if you can call them funny or maybe you might find different ones funny, so . . . This is a lovely world we live in. You just have to see it that way. The first few poems are in Spanish, so don’t feel bad to turn the page. There is plenty in store for everyone. Having dreamt often in the past of writing narratively but never being able to get myself to do so in a non-poetic style, there are also plenty of plots for your indulgences and my triumph over narratives. We have to learn to treat sex and other venues of life like they are new, like they have just come into the world, that virgin wonder and fantasy, as opposed to old and calculable. Breathe and take it slow and breathe in every vapor of love. That is why I go under the alias of The Virgin Poet.
