Come ci ricordano Greta Thunberg e i ragazzi di Fridays for future, per una riconversione economica a basse emissioni di CO2 è necessario un massiccio Green New Deal, che concili ambiente ed equità e riesca dunque ad affrontare insieme crisi climatica e crisi sociale. Non a caso, nel Next Generation EU, il programma europeo per la ripresa dalla crisi pandemica dovuta al Covid-19, la transizione ecologica è messa al primo posto. Le sfide della transizione ecologica è un appello ad attivarsi per una politica e un'economia completamente nuove: non basta cambiare i comportamenti individuali, dobbiamo cambiare un intero sistema sociale ed è tempo di reclamarlo con forza.

Questo libro è un antidoto contro entrambi, ma anche una mappa per raggiungere gli obiettivi di decarbonizzazione fissati per il 2030 e il 2050. Come scrive Roberto Cingolani, il passo del cambiamento deve essere abbastanza rapido da ridurre il riscaldamento globale entro la metà del secolo, ma anche abbastanza lento da permettere di adeguare infrastrutture e modelli di sviluppo senza creare sconvolgimenti sociali. I principi base sono quelli dell’energy mix (l’impiego di fonti diverse), della neutralità tecnologica e della relatività delle soluzioni. Perché il traguardo è uguale per tutti, ma ogni realtà locale dovrà individuare la strategia più adatta per arrivarci, tenendo conto delle risorse energetiche, dei vincoli economici, delle condizioni sociali. Con rigore e pragmatismo, Cingolani in queste pagine considera scenari diversi, analizza prospettive e confronta gli strumenti tecnologici a disposizione – tutti, compresi quelli che sono ancora allo stato di prototipo. E ne trae conclusioni. Un punto necessario e che insegna molto: non si può affrontare una traversata che durerà trent’anni illudendosi che non sorgano tempeste e non affiorino scogli all’orizzonte.
