Book Sexuality in Adolescence

Download or read book Sexuality in Adolescence written by Susan Moore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexuality in Adolescence considers the latest theory and research on adolescent development, focusing on sexuality as a vital aspect of normal, healthy maturation. Biological changes are discussed within a social context, and the latest research is presented on key issues of our time, including changes in teenage sexual behaviours and beliefs, sexual risk-taking, body dissatisfaction, sex education, teen pregnancy and abortion. Susan Moore and Doreen Rosenthal explore the roles of parents, peers, the media, social institutions and youth culture in adolescent sexual adjustment. This volume covers topical issues ranging from the role of the internet in adolescent romance to the pros and cons of abstinence education versus harm minimization. Issues, such as whether there are male-female differences in desire, sexuality, motives for sex, and beliefs about romance are examined, along with the question of whether a sexual double standard still exists. Maladaptive aspects of sexual development, including sexual risk-taking, disease, unplanned pregnancy, and sexual coercion are also covered. This fully revised and updated second edition also addresses the crucial issues of: sexual minority adolescents the social determinants of adolescent sexuality sexual health as opposed to sexual illness. This book aims to promote sexual well-being, and argues for the importance of the adolescent period as a time for engendering healthy sexual attitudes and practices. It will be valuable reading for students in the social and behavioural sciences interested in adolescent development and the topic of sexuality, and for professionals working with young people.

Theories of adolescence, along with emotional, physical and cognitive issues, are explored. Topics covered include families, peer relations, school and leisure time, as well as problem areas such as depression, drug consumption and delinquency. Handbook of Adolescent Development also incorporates a comprehensive review of the literature in the area and considers avenues for future research. Download or read book Dilemmas of Desire written by Deborah L. TOLMAN and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Be sexy but not sexual. Don't be a prude but don't be a slut. These are the cultural messages that barrage teenage girls. In movies and magazines, in music and advice columns, girls are portrayed as the object or the victim of someone else's desire--but virtually never as someone with acceptable sexual feelings of her own. What teenage girls make of these contradictory messages, and what they make of their awakening sexuality--so distant from and yet so susceptible to cultural stereotypes--emerges for the first time in frank and complex fashion in Deborah Tolman's Dilemmas of Desire. A unique look into the world of adolescent sexuality, this book offers an intimate and often disturbing, sometimes inspiring, picture of how teenage girls experience, understand, and respond to their sexual feelings, and of how society mediates, shapes, and distorts this experience. In extensive interviews, we listen as actual adolescent girls--both urban and suburban--speak candidly of their curiosity and confusion, their pleasure and disappointment, their fears, defiance, or capitulation in the face of a seemingly imperishable double standard that smiles upon burgeoning sexuality in boys yet frowns, even panics, at its equivalent in girls. As a vivid evocation of girls negotiating some of the most vexing issues of adolescence, and as a thoughtful, richly informed examination of the dilemmas these girls face, this readable and revealing book begins the critical work of understanding the sexuality of young women in all its personal, social, and emotional significance.

Book Adolescence in a Moroccan Town

Download or read book Adolescence in a Moroccan Town written by Susan Schaefer Davis and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few serious studies of adolescence in contemporary Islamic society, in spite of frequent reference to this part of the world as an example of close cultural regulation of sexuality and male-female interaction. This welcome contribution by an anthropologist and a psychologist is based on a long-term study of about 150 youths and their families in a town in northern Morocco. Topics given substantial treatment include sexuality, family, friendship, courtship, marriage, and social deviance; discussion often is organized around individual cases or interviews. The book is clearly written and will be useful to those concerned with sexuality and adolescence in the Middle East or cross-culturally. It is part of the series "Adolescents in a Changing World" ed. by B.B. and J.W. Whiting. In some respects it nicely complements the well-received book by L. Abu-Lughod, Veiled Sentiments (CH, May'87). The Davis and Davis volume is more explicitly concerned with psychological theory, formal interviews, and a community-wide sample; Abu-Lughod offers a more intimate and textured picture of domestic life.
