Les auteurs s'interrogent souvent sur la pertinence de cette variable dans le processus d'évaluation d'une marque. L'objectif de la thèse est double : montrer que l'effet du pays d'origine sur la qualité perçue n'a lieu que lorsque le consommateur est sensible à l'origine nationale perçue des marques, et chercher à identifier les antécédents de cette sensibilité. Le cadre conceptuel qui est construit s'appuie sur une revue de littérature ainsi qu'une étude exploratoire auprès de cinq industriels, trois créateurs de noms de marques et vingt-sept consommateurs. Il est confronté au terrain à travers une enquête auprès de 577 étudiants. Les hypothèses de la recherche sont testées à travers des analyses de variance et des modèles d'équations structurelles (LISREL). Les résultats suggèrent que la sensibilité à l'origine nationale perçue des marques joue bien un rôle modérateur du lien entre l'image d'un pays et la qualité perçue d'un produit. Ils indiquent en outre que l'implication dans le produit et l'ethnocentrisme du consommateur sont les éléments qui favorisent le plus une sensibilité aux variables d'origine.
