Book excerpt: From the cult of Saint Anne to the devotees of the Virgin of Guadalupe, from Saint Anthony who competed with Christ for popularity in Brazil, to Jesuits who mixed freely with shamans that talked with the gods, this exciting new anthology examines the conversion of the colonized. The essays examine how New World spirits transformed into Old World saints - for example, the spirit of love transfigured into the Virgin Mary - as well as the implications of the canonization of the first American saint. Colonial Saints illustrates the complex and intimate connections among confessional life writing, canonization, and the practices of the Inquisition. There was a dynamic exchange involving local agendas, the courts in Spain and France, and, of course, Rome. This bold collection clearly shows the interplay between slavery and spirituality, conversion and control, and the links between the sacred and the political.

Here are the verses of Love & Death, experienced by the divine immortal souls, fighting their own demons, in a world of dark mortal souls, a world of hate and chaos, destruction and confusion.

Book Bajo El Cielo Peruano

Download or read book Bajo El Cielo Peruano written by Pedro de Peralta Barnuevo and published by Unc Department of Romance Studies. This book was released on 2008 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bajo el Cielo Peruano: The Devout World of Peralta Barnuevo examines two of Peralta Barnuevo's overtly religious texts as contexts for the rich erudition demonstrated in other literary and historical genres authored by the early eighteenth-century Peruvian writer. This critical edition makes La Galeria de la Omnipotencia and Pasion y Triunfo de Christo available in print for the first time in over 260 years. The two major works span the years 1729 to 1738. La Galeria celebrates the canonization of Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo in a literary tribute and exemplifies how Peralta textualized the contradictions of viceregal loyalty and a commitment to a distinct American identity. Through an analysis of the trans-Atlantic history of the poetic joust in Hispanic letters, David Slade demonstrates how La Galeria exceeds the restrictions of its formulaic genre by offering a perspective on colonial Peru alternative to that of the official metropolitan discourse. Pasion y Triunfo, written in response to Peralta's crisis of faith, enters theological debates and displays the author's mature erudition, elevated rhetoric, and talent for invoking religion and history to serve literary production. Rebuked by the Inquisition, Peralta mounted a convincing defense to save both himself and the text from censorship. With the aim of centering Peralta within the canon of Latin American letters, Slade and coeditor Jerry Williams provide examples of problems and critical questions to be addressed when reading or teaching the two texts. They offer La Galeria and Pasion y Triunfo as a challenge to readers to reevaluate Peralta's legacy with respect to how he engaged Enlightenment influences, to teach his writings, and to treat them as an exegesis of religious writings in colonial Peru.

Book Imagen y Palabra

Download or read book Imagen y Palabra written by Eliezer Oyola and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Wounds of Love

  • Author : Frank Graziano
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2004-01-15

Download or read book Wounds of Love written by Frank Graziano and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peruvian mystic St. Rose of Lima (Isabel Flores y Oliva, 1586-1617) was canonized in 1671 as the first saint of the New World and remains the object of widespread devotion today. In this engrossing new study, Frank Graziano uses the example of St. Rose to explore the meaning of female mysticism and the way in which saints are products of their cultures. Virginity, austerity, eucharistic devotion, incessant mortification, and mystical marriage to Christ characterized the devotional regimen that structured St. Rose's entire life. Many of her mystical practices echo the symptoms of such modern psychological disorders as masochism, depression, hysteria, and anorexia nervosa. Graziano offers a sophisticated argument not only for the origins and meaning of these behaviors in Rose's case, but also for the reason her culture venerated them as signs of sanctity. In the process he explores a wide range of themes, from the idea of suffering as an expression of love to the assimilation of childhood trauma through religious repetition. Graziano also offers a penetrating analysis of the politics of Rose's canonization. He finds that her mystical union with God--bypassing the institutional channels of sacrament and priestly mediation--was inherently subversive to the bureaucratized Church. Canonization was a cooptation by which Rose's competing claim to Christ was integrated into the Catholic canon. The book concludes with a fascinating exploration of mystical eroticism, with its intense experiences of vision and ecstasy. The eroticized suffering of many mystics is shown to be very human in origin: the mystic's wounded love is projected onto a God conceived to accommodate it. Wounds of Love is based on a decade of research in archives, rare books, and an extraordinary range of secondary sources. Introducing an innovative method that integrates history, cultural studies, psychoanalysis, and clinical psychology, this compelling work offers a bold new interpretation of female mysticism.

Book Spanish American Saints and the Rhetoric of Identity 1600 1810

Download or read book Spanish American Saints and the Rhetoric of Identity 1600 1810 written by Ronald J. Morgan and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish American civilization developed over several generations as Iberian-born settlers and their "New World" descendants adapted Old World institutions, beliefs, and literary forms to diverse American social contexts. Like their European forebears, criollos—descendants of Spanish immigrants who called the New World home—preserved the memory of persons of extraordinary Roman Catholic piety in a centuries-old literary form known as the saint's Life. These criollo religious biographies reflect not only traditional Roman Catholic values but also such New World concerns as immigration, racial mixing, and English piracy. Ronald Morgan examines the collective function of the saint's Life from 1600 to the end of the colonial period, arguing that this literary form served not only to prove the protagonist’s sanctity and move the faithful to veneration but also to reinforce sentiments of group pride and solidarity. When criollos praised americano saints, he explains, they also called attention to their own virtues and achievements. Morgan analyzes the printed hagiographies of five New World holy persons: Blessed Sebastián de Aparicio (Mexico), St. Rosa de Lima (Peru), St. Mariana de Jesús (Ecuador), Catarina de San Juan (Mexico), and St. Felipe de Jesús (Mexico). Through close readings of these texts, he explores the significance of holy persons as cultural and political symbols. By highlighting this convergence of religious and sociopolitical discourse, Morgan sheds important light on the growth of Spanish American self-consciousness and criollo identity formation. By focusing on the biographical process itself, Morgan demonstrates the importance of reading each hagiographic text for its idiosyncrasies rather than its conventional features. His work offers new insight into the Latin American cult of saints, inviting scholars to look beyond the isolated lives of individuals to the cultural and social milieus in which their sanctity originated and their public reputations took shape.

This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Poetry of Juan Ram n Jim nez

Download or read book The Poetry of Juan Ram n Jim nez written by Julio Hans C. Jensen and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez (1881–1958; Nobel laureate 1956) wrote at a key moment in literary history. Since Jiménez’s lyrical output covers the poetic tradition from Romanticism through Symbolism to the Avant-Gardes, his work can be regarded as a condensation of the modern paradigm. Julio Jensen investigates the lyrical subject appearing in Jiménez’s poetry as exemplary of the notion of modern subjectivity. He does so by assuming a historical correlation between literature and philosophy in the sense that if philosophical discourse conceptualizes the prevailing understanding of the human being at a given moment, literary discourse represents it. Modern thought does not accept any other foundation than subjectivity. At the same time, the awareness of the subject’s finitude engenders pessimism with respect to its status as world-generating principle. One of the primary aims of this study, then, is to show how Jiménez poignantly enacts this vacillation between self-enthronement and self-eradication. With insightful readings of Jiménez’s poetry, the author opens a rich vein in the work of a writer who would serve as a central reference for later Spanish-language poets such as Federico Garcá Lorca, Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz.
