Book Contemporary Argentina

Download or read book Contemporary Argentina written by David J Keeling and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this perceptive book, David Keeling analyzes Argentinas changing position in the modern world economy against the backdrop of the countrys regional development processes. Combining systematic and area-based approaches, he discusses international and national trends that have shaped the social and economic geography of Argentina in profound and fundamental ways. Drawing on recent census data as well as on material from the Menem government, Keeling also explores whether Argentinas participation in the new world government has adversely affected environmental, labor, and social conditions. Since 1989, Argentina has experienced perhaps its most significant period of change since federation in 1880. Under the leadership of Carlos Menem and the Justicialista political party, contemporary Argentina is emerging from the chaos of long-term instability to reassert itself as a viable player in both regional and global systems.

Book Transcultural Insights into Contemporary Irish Literature and Society

Download or read book Transcultural Insights into Contemporary Irish Literature and Society written by María Amor Barros-del Río and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-19 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcultural Insights into Contemporary Irish Literature and Society examines the transcultural patterns that have been enriching Irish literature since the twentieth century and engages with the ongoing dialogue between contemporary Irish literature and society. Driven by the growing interest in transcultural studies in the humanities, this volume provides an insightful analysis of how Irish literature handles the delicate balance between authenticity and folklore, and uniformisation and diversity in an increasingly globalised world. Following a diachronic approach, the volume includes critical readings of canonical Irish literature as an uncharted exchange of intercultural dialogues. The text also explores the external and internal transcultural traits present in recent Irish literature, and its engagement with social injustice and activism, and discusses location and mobility as vehicles for cultural transfer and the advancement of the women’s movement. A final section also includes an examination of literary expressions of hybridisation, diversity and assimilation to scrutinise negotiations of new transcultural identities. In the light of the compiled contributions, the volume ends with a revisitation of Irish studies in a world in which national identity has become increasingly problematic. This volume presents new insights into the fictional engagement of contemporary Irish literature with political, social and economic issues, and its efforts to accommodate the local and the global, resulting in a reshaping of national collective imaginaries.

Book excerpt: * Provides a deeper, long-term understanding of the nation and its people * Designed to supplement the "usual suspect" guide books A guidebook can show you where to go, a phrasebook what to say when you get there. Only Speak the Culture: Spain will lead you to the nation's soul. Spain boasts a rich and sometimes misunderstood culture, itself infused with the influences of other great and distant civilizations. Spanish life, language and culture in its widest sense is a major force of growing influence. How many outside it understand its origins and significance? Through exploring the people, the movements and the lifestyles that have shaped the Spanish experience, you will come to an intimate understanding of Spain and the Spanish. There are many travel guides and manuals on living in Spain. Speak the Culture: Spain is different: a superbly designed, informed and entertaining insight into Spanish life and culture and who the Spanish really are. For new residents, business travelers, holidaymakers, students and lovers of Spain everywhere, Speak the Culture: Spain is an engaging companion and guide to an enviably rich civilization at the heart of Europe. Excerpt "As you might expect Spain's traditional vernacular architecture isn't easily pigeonholed; regionalism generates marked variation. Available building materials and, more significantly, climate have always dictated how people build their houses or outbuildings. The Spaniards' approach to living arrangements is more easily summed up. They're nothing if not sociable; while northern Europeans anxiously section off their own plot of terra firma, in Spain they seem to enjoy living on top of each other, clustered in apartments and houses around the plaza mayor. It's not like they're short of space either--a population density of around 85 per sq km is one of the lowest in Europe."

Book Climate Change and Ancient Societies in Europe and the Near East

Download or read book Climate Change and Ancient Societies in Europe and the Near East written by Paul Erdkamp and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change over the past thousands of years is undeniable, but debate has arisen about its impact on past human societies. This book explores the link between climate and society in ancient worlds, focusing on the ancient economies of western Eurasia and northern Africa from the fourth millennium BCE up to the end of the first millennium CE. This book contributes to the multi-disciplinary debate between scholars working on climate and society from various backgrounds. The chronological boundaries of the book are set by the emergence of complex societies in the Neolithic on the one end and the rise of early-modern states in global political and economic exchange on the other. In order to stimulate comparison across the boundaries of modern periodization, this book ends with demography and climate change in early-modern and modern Italy, a society whose empirical data allows the kind of statistical analysis that is impossible for ancient societies. The book highlights the role of human agency, and the complex interactions between the natural environment and the socio-cultural, political, demographic, and economic infrastructure of any given society. It is intended for a wide audience of scholars and students in ancient economic history, specifically Rome and Late Antiquity.

Book Revival A History of Spanish Literature 1930

Download or read book Revival A History of Spanish Literature 1930 written by Ernest Merimee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present English version, authorized by the publishers and heirs of M. Merimee, is based on the third French Edition. New material of two sorts has been added, however. First, the translator has been allowed to utlize an annotated, interleaved copy of the Precis, 1922, in which the author, and after his death his son Henri, himself a distinguished Hispanist, had set down material for the next revision. This accounts for many inserted names and phrases, and some paragraphs. Second, the translator has rewritten and added with some freedom.
