In Part Three the author concentrates upon the appearance stories themselves and raises the following questions: Are pre-redactional forms discernible? If so, do such demonstrate by comparison similarities of form and content? Does a NT 'Gattung' stand behind them? And, finally, Part Four probes the matter of analogies in the world of primitive Christianity, while Part Five summarizes and asks provisionally if observations of a formal nature invite suggestive possibilities for further work on the question of historical experience behind the stories. An attempt at critical review of such questions is long overdue.

Dissatisfied with so much of what he read, he set out to write his own book, making a thourough examination of all the passages relating to the resurrection in the New Testament, beginning with the fanmous verse in 1 Corinthians 15 and going through to the last chapter of John's Gospel. The results of this exhausttive study are largely negative, Ludemann succeeds in demonstrating just how much tradition and the evangelists themselves have contributed to the Easter story. THis is an honest scholarly book with the ring of truth, and needs to be read without prejudice. Those who do so will find that in fact it is remarkably positive.

Book excerpt: Building on the form-critical assessment of the Lukan ascension story (LK 24:50-53; Acts 1:1-12) as a rapture story, and motivated by the consideration that the 'monotheistic principle' almost inevitably must have led to a reestimate of the meaning and function of rapture in comparison with heathen rapture stories (immortalisation and deification!), the present study seeks to investigate the Lukan ascension story in the light of the first-century Jewish rapture traditions (Enoch, Elijah, Moses, Baruch, Ezra, etc.). The author argues that first-century Judaism provides a more plausible horizon of understanding for the ascension story than the Graeco-Roman rapture tradition, and that Luke develops his 'rapture christology' not as a reinterpretation of the primitive exaltation kerygma (G. Lohfink), but as a response to the eschatological question, i.e. the delay of the parousia, so as to secure the unity of salvation history.

Professor Lüdemann's published conclusions about Christianity aroused great controversy in his native Germany, where the Confederation of Protestant Churches in Lower Saxony demanded his immediate dismissal from the theological faculty of his university. Despite this threat to his academic freedom, he has retained his post at the university, although the chair he holds was renamed to disassociate him from the training program of German pastors. Lüdemann is also the author of Jesus After 2000 Years, Paul: The Founder of Christianity, and The Resurrection of Christ: A Historical Inquiry.
