Book The Treatment of Hodgkin s Disease

Download or read book The Treatment of Hodgkin s Disease written by Enrico Anglesio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discussion of some diseases is only occasionally enlivened by the emergence of new worthwhile facts. In the case of others, it would seem that, even if only a few years have passed, each new discussion wears the air of a revolution. Hodgkin's disease, at least from the pathological standpoint, is not so extraordinarily fickle and certainly does not touch either of these two extremes of variability. But it is still a fertile field of study and presents its full share of innovations and practical results. This is perhaps due to the special position it occupies between tumours and inflammatory diseases, or possibly to a lucky series of coincidences; the truth is that events have been on the move for some years now in the case of this disease. There can be no doubt that surprising progress has been made in connec tion with Hodgkin's disease, due, one feels, to close cooperation between several branches of medical science, each of which has had occasion to make new and useful contributions. This does not, however, hide the fact that certain important matters are still not clear, in particular the cause of the disease, its essential nature and, indeed, the best method for its treatment.

Book New Trends in the Treatment of Cancer

Download or read book New Trends in the Treatment of Cancer written by L. Manuila and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is true that certain types of neoplasms, such as those of the pancreas and brain, are still lesions with a grave prognosis, there are many other common cancers for which appropriate treatment can be curative in substantial numbers of patients ..• This hopeful aspect of cancer is insufficiently appreciated, even by the medical profession itself; too many pessimistic patients find themselves consulting equally pessimistic physicians. WHO Expert Committee on Cancer Treatment *. The aim of this monograph is to present the latest information on the treatment of cancer, and the words quoted above from the report of a WHO Expert Committee on Cancer Treatment form an appropriate introduction to the subject. The pessimism to which they refer is still all too often characteristic of the attitude towards cancer and its treatment. The various chapters have been specially written for this monograph by specialists of international repute, and it will be noted that some of them were participants in the meeting of the WHO Expert Committee on Cancer Treatment mentioned above.

Book New Aspects in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Hodgkin s Disease

Download or read book New Aspects in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Hodgkin s Disease written by Volker Diehl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the field of Hodgkin's lymphoma, many new data have been collected during the last decade both on the cell of origin of this disease and on more effective therapies to cure the majority of pa tients even in the advanced stages. Therefore, it seems to be justi fied to compile these new data in a special volume of Recent Re sults in Cancer Research. This volume summarizes the contribu tions presented at the First International Symposium on Hodgkin's Disease that took place in Cologne (FRG) on October 2-3, 1988. There is little doubt that the Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (H and RS) cells and their variants represent the malignant population in Hodgkin's lymphoma; however, there is still a fierce debate as to the possible cell of origin of Hand RS cells. Many of the problems confounding earlier research into this question were related to the difficulty or virtual impossibility, of obtaining purified populations of Hand RS cells. Most of the recent progress stems from the establishment of permanent cell lines of Hand RS cells in culture.

Book Henry Kaplan and the Story of Hodgkin s Disease

Download or read book Henry Kaplan and the Story of Hodgkin s Disease written by Charlotte DeCroes Jacobs and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-28 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “compelling—and wonderfully told” biography of the American physician who pioneered a treatment for a cancer of lymph tissue (Wall Street Journal). In the 1950s, ninety-five percent of patients with Hodgkin’s disease, a cancer of lymph tissue which afflicts young adults, died. Today most are cured, due mainly to the efforts of Dr. Henry Kaplan. Henry Kaplan and the Story of Hodgkin’s Disease explores the life of this multifaceted, internationally known radiation oncologist, called a “saint” by some, a “malignant son of a bitch” by others. Kaplan’s passion to cure cancer dominated his life and helped him weather the controversy that marked each of his innovations, but it extracted a high price, leaving casualties along the way. Most never knew of his family struggles, his ill-fated love affair with Stanford University, or the humanitarian efforts that imperiled him. Today, Kaplan ranks as one of the foremost physician-scientists in the history of cancer medicine. In this book Charlotte Jacobs gives us the first account of a remarkable man who changed the face of cancer therapy and the history of a once fatal, now curable, cancer. She presents a dual drama—the biography of this renowned man who called cancer his “Moby Dick” and the history of Hodgkin’s disease, the malignancy he set out to annihilate. The book recounts the history of Hodgkin’s disease, first described in 1832: the key figures, the serendipitous discoveries of radiation and chemotherapy, the improving cure rates, the unanticipated toxicities. The lives of individual patients, bold enough to undergo experimental therapies, lend poignancy to the successes and failures. Praise for Henry Kaplan and the Story of Hodgkin’s Disease “Very few biographies so fully chronicle an important period of medical history as this outstanding book by Jacobs. Clearly and concisely written, this is the life story of a 20th-century force of nature . . . . Highly recommended.” —CHOICE “Dr. Jacobs’s book is a riveting read, meticulously covering a time of dramatic creativity in American medicine while also revealing the personal infighting that took place behind the scenes.” —The Pharos “A great read for those of us who trained in an era of evidence-based medicine, and want to learn what it was like to actually create the evidence, and for the first time make a difference in our patient’s lives.” —Oncology Times

Book Diagnosis and Therapy of Malignant Lymphoma

Download or read book Diagnosis and Therapy of Malignant Lymphoma written by K. Musshoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: K. MUSSHOFF The group of diseases known as malignant lymphomas are, for a number of reasons, of equal interest to theoretical and clinical medicine. New findings in the fields of virology and immunology could conceivably shed some light on the so far unknown etiology of malignant lymphomas. A viral etiology could explain many of the dis parate findings with such a puzzling disease as lymphogranulomatosis, which shows both all the signs of malignancy, such as the characteristic Reed-Sternberg and Hodgkin cells and chromosome abnormalities, and those of an inflammatory disease, i.e. typical changes in the blood count and bone marrow and in the distribution of serum proteins. So far we have not been able to identify the etiology of this disease. However, clinical observations and pathomorphological investigations involving a joint effort by different branches of medicine have brought us closer to an understanding of the clinical picture. Descriptive anatomy has given us a clear picture of the regional distribution of the lymphatic system, which has long been neglected in the past. The introductory paper by Dr. S. KUBIK (Zurich), who has made valuable contributions to our knowl edge of the anatomy of the lymphatic system, deals with this subject.

Book Malignant Lymphomas and their Management

Download or read book Malignant Lymphomas and their Management written by M. L. Jacobs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years, the management of lymphomatous disease has followed a general trend from the purely empirical and intuitive use of medications to radiation, to surgery, and to chemotherapy with alkylating agents and anti-metabolites. In the 20th century, the treatment of these diseases has been predominantly by radiation. As radiology emerged from ROENTGEN'S original work to the sophisticated science of the present, the radiological equipment, which had been crude and inaccurate, evolved into mechanical and electronic instruments of enormous complexity and capable of great accuracy. The progress and success of radiation therapy for malig nant disease paralleled the technical development of the devices employed. For this reason, the chronology of the parallel development is given in detail. The gross and histologic descriptions of the lymphomas, from 1832 to the present, are voluminous and controversial. Therefore the pathology is reviewed and these diseases classified before reviewing therapy of the lymphomas. I. Hodgkin's Disease 1. Pathology and Classification The current classification of the so-called lymphomata into HODGKIN'S disease, lymphosarcoma, and reticulum cell sarcoma is modern. Any historical or scientific review of ,the subject rightfully begins with a discussion of HODGKIN'S original paper entitled "On Some Morbid Appearances of the Absorbent Glands and Spleen" published in 1832. This classical report describes the clinical and gross pathologic findings in a group of patients whose symptomatology presented striking similarities; notably enlargement of peripheral lymph nodes in the neck, the axillae, and the groin and, frequently, enlargement of the mediastinal nodes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
