Book The Democratic Imagination

Download or read book The Democratic Imagination written by Louis Filler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This festschrift celebrates the accomplishments of renowned social scientist Irving Louis Horowitz as he turned sixty-five. Since Horowitz's views were global and his discourse was never restricted to national boundaries, the volume includes contributions from across the globe. Collectively, the book represents a personal as well as an intellectual statement from the contributors, as each one was a friend and colleague of Horowitz. The life span of Horowitz's ideas stretches across boundaries, many which are focused on in The Democratic Imagination. The twenty-seven essays address Horowitz's work, ideas, and influence. Horowitz was well known for his analysis of the situation in Cuba, disarray in American sociology, the impacts of technology on the publishing industry, and policy-making in the post-Cold-War era. Contributions also take note of Horowitz's involvement in diverse areas: his work with Robert Kennedy; Radio Marti; the United States General Accounting Office, and his efforts on behalf of the freedom of the press. In a final section, Horowitz responds to each of the contributors. This work, celebrating one of the most esteemed social scientists of the twentieth century, acknowledges his manifold contributions to the multiple areas in which he worked.

Book Theoretical Perspectives on Terminology

Download or read book Theoretical Perspectives on Terminology written by Pamela Faber and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this volume is to provide an overview of different theoretical perspectives on Terminology, from Wüster to other initiatives that have emerged since the beginning of the 1990s. The volume also covers important topics which have significantly influenced Terminology and its evolution. These include variation, multidimensionality, conceptual relations, and equivalence, among others. The twenty-two chapters of the volume, all written by acknowledged experts in the field, explore the questions that different approaches seek to answer. They also describe the theoretical and methodological principles that were devised over the years to characterize, analyze, and represent terminological data. The semi-chronological, semi-thematic organization of chapters not only provides readers with a clear vision of the evolution of ideas in Terminology, but also gives them an understanding as to why some of these ideas were initially challenged. In addition to being accessible to readers unfamiliar with the basic theoretical principles in the field, the chapters provide a showcase of current research in the field, the challenges looming on the horizon, and finally future directions in terminological research. By bringing together work that is often disseminated in different forums and written in different languages, this volume provides a unique opportunity to look at how different theoretical approaches to Terminology offer complementary perspectives on terms, concepts and specialized knowledge, and help to further a better understanding of the complex phenomena that terminologists must successfully deal with in their work.

Book Non Europhone Intellectuals

Download or read book Non Europhone Intellectuals written by Oumar Kane and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2012-09-05 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Arabic writing spans a period of eight hundred years in sub-Saharan Africa. Hundreds of thousands of manuscripts in Arabic or Ajami (African languages written with the Arabic script) are preserved in public libraries and private collections in sub-Saharan Africa. This Islamic Library includes historical, devotional, pedagogical, polemical and political writings, most of which have not yet been adequately studied. This book, Non-Europhone Intellectuals, studies the research carried out on the Islamic library and shows that Muslim intellectuals, in West Africa in particular, have produced huge literature in Arabic and Ajami. It is impossible to reconstitute this library completely. As the texts have existed for centuries and are mostly in the form of unpublished manuscripts, only some of them have been transmitted to us while others have perished because of poor conservation. Efforts toward collecting them continues and the documents collected thus far attest to an intense intellectual life and important debates on society that have been completely ignored by the overwhelming majority of Europhone intellectuals. During European colonial rule and after the independence of African nations, Islamic education experienced some neglect, but the Islamic scholarly tradition did not decline. On the contrary, it has prospered with the proliferation of modern Islamic schools and the rise of dozens of Islamic institutions of higher learning. In recent years, the field of Islamic studies in West Africa has continued to attract the attention of erudite scholars, notably in anthropology and history, who are investing in learning the languages and working on this Islamic archive. As more analytical works are done on this archive, there will be continued modification in terms of the debate on knowledge production in West Africa.

Book The International Encyclopedia of Education

Download or read book The International Encyclopedia of Education written by Torsten Husen and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1994-04-19 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarly information in all fields of human knowledge is in continuous flux. Educational practices change not only as a result of reforms which are the subject of legislation, but also in response to new societal demands, needs, and changes in the economic conditions in different countries. It is this change within the various fields of education and the fact that many of the entries in the first edition were written in the early 1980s which convinced the editors in 1990 of the need for a completely new edition of the Encyclopedia. The vast majority of entries in the second edition are completely new; in only a few cases, have entries from the first edition or from the supplementary volumes, been updated. New entries have also been commissioned on specific topics: sociology of education, girls and women in education, the history of education, anthropology, philosophy of education and instructional psychology, so that the scope of the original sections has been expanded. Every effort has been made to present the most up-to-date information about the theme dealt with in each entry. Authors were selected on the strength of their 'worldwide' knowledge of the topic on which they were asked to write. The authors of over 1,200 entries represent 96 countries. The Honorary Editorial Advisory Board helped ensure that a balance was achieved and contacts with international organizations assisted in selecting authors with a good international overview. Particular attention has been paid to the inclusion of entries of special concern to the Third World. This is clearly evident in those entries dealing with educational and policy planning, economics of education, vocational education and comparative education.

Book Connecting Histories of Education

Download or read book Connecting Histories of Education written by Barnita Bagchi and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of education in the modern world is a history of transnational and cross-cultural influence. This collection explores those influences in (post) colonial and indigenous education across different geographical contexts. The authors emphasize how local actors constructed their own adaptation of colonialism, identity, and autonomy, creating a multi-centric and entangled history of modern education. In both formal as well as informal aspects, they demonstrate that transnational and cross-cultural exchanges in education have been characterized by appropriation, re-contextualization, and hybridization, thereby rejecting traditional notions of colonial education as an export of pre-existing metropolitan educational systems.
