En arrière-plan, la mondialisation a accéléré la diffusion des informations, des techniques et des modèles d'organisation. Elle a également conduit à une intensification de la concurrence, qui s'est accompagnée d'un raccourcissement des cycles d'innovation, de marketing et d'investissement. Enfin, dans des entreprises soumises à un impératif de réactivité, les modes de management et de communication se sont imprégnés d'un sentiment d'urgence. Accorder de la considération au "temps court" est une nécessité pour les entreprises : il ne saurait leur en être fait grief. L'activité des entreprises se décompose en effet en des temporalités variées, qu'il leur revient de savoir faire coexister. Mais la crise a démontré les effets pervers associés au "court-termisme". Les entreprises doivent retrouver le sens du "temps long" dans la relation à l'ensemble des parties prenantes : leurs actionnaires, naturellement, mais également leurs collaborateurs, leurs clients, leurs fournisseurs et leurs sous-traitants. Retrouver le sens du long terme, c'est mieux s'inscrire dans le temps de la stratégie, cette longue période sur laquelle s'apprécient les prises de risque. C'est également aboutir à favoriser la convergence des intérêts des parties prenantes, qui tendent alors à s'aligner, dans la perspective d'une optimisation de la création de valeur. Allonger l'horizon temporel des entreprises n'est ainsi pas une fin en soi, mais un moyen au service de l'émergence d'une croissance plus durable. [4e de couv.]

Book excerpt: In the early stages of planning the Third International Conference in System Science in Health Care, the steering committee members, most of whom had participated in the first conference in Paris (1976) and the second in Montreal (1980), made some basic decisions about organization of subject matter. The earlier meetings had been very successful in bringing together specialists from the health professions and the traditional sciences. In addition to physicians and nurses, these were representatives of the disciplines of the behavioral sciences, system theory, economics, engineering, and the emergency fields of management science and informatics -all concerned with the development of health resources in a broad system context. The reported research and experience of the many disciplines represented had dealt with one or more of three concerns: 1) a major health problem, such as cardiovascular disease, or an important popUlation at risk, such as the elderly or children or workers; 2) some generic aspect of organization and decision making, including trial and evaluation ofinnovative health strategies; and 3) the methodology of research and analysis in system of health service. The challenge to the conference organizers lay in the eliciting and arranging of experiences in such a way that the health services could be seen as purposeful,living, evolving systems.
