Significant ad- vances made over the past several years in the purification of several hematopoietic growth factors, such as erythro- poietin and colony stimulating factor; the availability of several other growth factors, such as the interleukins which are important in regulating the production of red blood cells, leukocytes, megakaryocytes and platelets are discus- sed. Numerous toxic chemical substances are being produced in our environment which people are exposed todaily causing a suppression of erythropoiesis, myelopoiesis and megakaryo- cytopoiesis. Attempts to evaluate both the therapeutic role of some of the newer growth factors, such as erythropoietin in the anemia of end stage disease, as well as colony stimu- lating factors in somehematopoietic abnormalities are also covered in this volume. In addition, numerous chemical fac- tors in our environment which suppress major hematopoietic lineages stimulated by erythropoietin, macrophage colony stimulating factor, granulocyte colony stimulating factor, interleukin 1-alpha, 1-beta, 2,3,4,5,6, and 7 are also in- cluded. Book excerpt: Not everyone is a friend of the manifold abbreviations that have by now beCome a part of the scientific language of medicine. In order to avoid misunderstanding these abbreviations, it is wise to refer to a reliable dic tionary, such as this one prepared by Heister. The abbreviation ED means, for instance, effective dose to the pharmacologist. However, it might also stand for emetic dose. Radiologists use the same abbreviation for erythema dose, and ED could also mean ethyl dichlorarsine. A com mon meaning of ECU is European currency unit, a meaning that might not be very often in scientific medical publications. ECU, however, also means environmental control unit or European Chiropractic Union. Hopefully, those making inventions and discoveries will make use of Heister's dictionary before creating new abbreviations when preparing manuscripts for scientific publications. It is a very worthwhile goal not to use the same abbreviation for several different terms, especially if it is already widely accepted to mean only one of them. It may be impossible, however, to achieve this goal in different scientific disciplines. Therefore, although it is wise for the abbreviations used in a publication to be defined, it is also very helpful for readers and writers to use a dictionary such as this one. The author deserves our warmest thanks since we know that compiling such a comprehensive dictionary is based upon incredibly hard effort.

The Workshop was an initiative of the Dutch foundation for a Reference Laboratory for Anticoagulant Control (RELAC) and it was organized by the Boerhaave Committee for postgraduate teaching of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Leiden. The Workshop was held under the auspices of five organizations i. e. the European Community Bureau of Refer ence (BCR) , the European Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (ECCLS), the International Association of Biological Standardization (lABS), the International Committee for Standar dization in Haematology (ICSH), ·and the International Committee on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ICTH). The aim of the Workshop was to discuss and develop a method for calibration of reagents, i. e. thromboplastins and/or plasmas used for the prothrombin time. During the Workshop three recent thromboplastin calibration studies were discussed, the results of which are presented in chapters 4, 7 and 9. These studies were carried out on the basis of a new calibration model developed by experts working with BCR and WHO. The usefulness of this model and the standardization system based on it is the leading thread running through this volume. Statisticians and clinicians discuss the results from a scientific point of view. Thromboplastin manufacturers, for whom especially the use of the model and the system is intended, discuss the matter also from an economic and legal point of view.

In the past, evaluation and treatment options for patients with this syndrome were either empirical or based on observational reports of clinical outcomes. It is now generally agreed that to acquire meaningful clinical data, a randomized clinical trial is the best method of clinical research. Over the past few years an ever-increasing number of randomized clinical tests have resulted in a much deeper evidence-based understanding of the pathophysiology, presentation, risk assessment, and management of the acute coronary syndrome and its subsets, i.e., unstable angina, non-Q wave myocardial infarction, and ST elevation/Q-wave infarction. This book organizes the data gleaned from these trials to allow the reader to better understand the best use of individual forms of evaluation and treatment, and how these individual treatments can be best combined to result in optimal patient outcome.
