Les difficultés envisagées concernent les insécurités ou crises liées au manque d'eau, aux excès d'eau et à la détérioration de la qualité de l'eau et des écosystèmes aquatiques. L'analyse de ces difficultés potentielles, dont tout le monde pressent que les conséquences pourraient être dramatiques, l'analyse de leur probabilité d'occurrence et de leur échelonnement dans le temps ont pour objet de tenter, par l'action, de les prévenir, ou, si elles survenaient, d'en amoindrir les effets. Deux causes principales de ces difficultés sont mises en avant : - l'effet des changements démographiques, qui vont vraisemblablement faire croître la population de 6 à 9 milliards d'êtres humains d'ici 2050 et faire passer le taux d'urbanisation de 50 % à 80 %. La question de l'eau - production alimentaire, adduction d'eau potable et assainissement - y est centrale ; - l'effet des changements climatiques liés aux émissions de gaz à effets de serre, qui auront une incidence progressive sur les situations moyennes, mais agiront aussi sur les événements extrêmes (crues, sécheresse) dont les fréquences sont susceptibles de varier notablement. Le rapport aborde les problèmes de ressources en eau, de production alimentaire, d'écosystèmes, de qualité de l'eau et de risques d'inondation. Ces questions sont examinées selon six grands thèmes : bilan besoins-ressources à l'échelle mondiale et alimentation ; gestion des eaux à l'échelle régionale des bassins versants ; l'eau à l'échelle locale des grandes mégalopoles ; écosystèmes aquatiques ; eau et santé ; eau et climat. Le rapport formule enfin des recommandations, tant sur les actions publiques préventives à mener, à caractère réglementaire ou économique, que sur les actions de recherche ou acquisitions de connaissances nouvelles à programmer.

Their relevance in sediment quality assessment is largely related to their benthic and detritivorous life habit. In this book, we aim to present the state of the art of Pollution Biology using oligochaete worms in laboratory and field studies. Future research will require the combination of a variety of methodological approaches and the integration of the resulting information, avoiding fragmented and often conflicting visions of the relationships of the species with their environment. Current approaches to ecotoxicology and bioaccumulation using ecological risk assessment provide the opportunity to relate community studies with probability of effects. This book addresses three main themes: Ecological and Field Studies using the composition and structure of oligochaete communities, Toxicology and Laboratory Studies, and Bioaccumulation and Trophic Transfer Studies. Two appendices list values of toxicological parameters (LC50, EC50) and several bioaccumulation variables (bioaccumulation factors, biological half-life, toxicokinetic coefficients, and critical body residues) for different oligochaete species. Additional information is provided on Methodological Issues and on the Taxonomy of several oligochaete families, with information on the most recent taxonomic debates. Each chapter includes a critical view, based on the authors’ experience, of a number of current issues which have been raised in the literature.

C. , the suggestion was made to hold the second in Pallanza, on Lake Maggiore, at the C. N. R. -Istituto Italiano di Idrobiologia. At the same time it was decided that there should be a symposium every third year. The organization of the symposium was made considerably easier by the Senior Editor's having been in personal contact with several Russian colleagues (courtesy of a kind invitation from the U. S. S. R. Academy of Sciences), the 'Hamburg Group' and the Junior Editor. Correspondence with various students of Oligochaeta also furnished many useful suggestions. The Second International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology was therefore held in Pallanza in late September 1982 and was attended by 53 scientists from 16 countries in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. No review papers were formally invited as this had already been done at the first symposium: all the papers were accordingly allotted the same time for oral presentation. These proceedings contain all papers Hrabe and Slepukhina, which were given in absentia, as it presented at the symposium, including those by was impossible for the authors to join the group. The main topics were taxonomy and evolution of Oligo chaeta, life-cyle and population studies, the role of Oligo chaeta in assessing water pollution, physiolog ical studies, community and distribution studies. Special taxonomic workshops took place in the evenings.

Since the Jurassic, the four families of sturgeon-like fish have been restricted to the Holarctic, where until very recently they flourished in most major river systems. Today, however, virtually all species of sturgeons and paddlefishes face difficult conservation issues. Papers in the first section of this volume examine paleontology, systematics, evolution and basic biology of Acipenseriformes. The second section of this volume details current conservation status for most of the world's living species of Acipenseriformes. These papers mark the first attempt to make such a global review of recent data from across the northern hemisphere. The emerging picture is discouraging, for negative anthropogenic impacts range from overfishing to water pollution, to dams and water diversion projects, and all species are threatened to some degree. The third section of the volume considers specific human impacts and responses to conservation issues. These include: the Aral Sea ecological disaster and its impact on native sturgeons; a review of methods for restoring sturgeon populations; the use of molecular techniques in developing conservation strategies; the extreme sensitivity of sturgeons and paddlefishes to overfishing; and the history of a recently convicted caviar poaching ring.
