Book The Bourgeois Revolution in France 1789 1815

Download or read book The Bourgeois Revolution in France 1789 1815 written by Henry Heller and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last generation the classic Marxist interpretation of the French Revolution has been challenged by the so-called revisionist school. The Marxist view that the Revolution was a bourgeois and capitalist revolution has been questioned by Anglo-Saxon revisionists like Alfred Cobban and William Doyle as well as a French school of criticism headed by François Furet. Today revisionism is the dominant interpretation of the Revolution both in the academic world and among the educated public. Against this conception, this book reasserts the view that the Revolution - the capital event of the modern age - was indeed a capitalist and bourgeois revolution. Based on an analysis of the latest historical scholarship as well as on knowledge of Marxist theories of the transition from feudalism to capitalism, the work confutes the main arguments and contentions of the revisionist school while laying out a narrative of the causes and unfolding of the Revolution from the eighteenth century to the Napoleonic Age.

Book La politique conomique bourgeoise

Download or read book La politique conomique bourgeoise written by Jean-Luc Dallemagne and published by FeniXX. This book was released on 1972-01-01T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Baltic Commerce and Urban Society 1500 1700

Download or read book Baltic Commerce and Urban Society 1500 1700 written by Maria Bogucka and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great merchant port of Danzig, now Gdansk, is at the centre of this set of studies by Professor Maria Bogucka. Through it passed the greatest part of the trade that linked the West with Poland and the Baltic; from it the commercial culture of the West spread out into the towns of Poland, and with it new currents in religion and urban life, and from there it began to permeate the whole of Polish society. The studies in this volume examine both the social and economic sides of this process, looking at articles of commerce and trends in urbanization, as well as patterns of poor relief and gender relations. The author's aim is to analyse specific aspects of what happened in Poland, while situating these in the broader context of the development of early modern European society.

Book The Challenge of Neutrality

Download or read book The Challenge of Neutrality written by Georges André Chevallaz and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prominent historian and former President of the Swiss Confederation Georges-Andr Chevallaz begins his study of Swiss neutrality during World War II with two essential questions: Why, in the face of German imperialism ”with its authoritarian, totalitarian, and racist ideology ”did Switzerland declare neutrality? Why did it not join the "camp of democracies," or the other European nations who resolved to hold firm against the Germans? Chevallaz's provocative and insightful book, presented here for the first time in English, attempts to answer these questions. Chevallaz further offers an even-handed reevaluation of the role of the principal actors in Swiss politics of the time, notably Marcel Pilet-Golaz, head of the Department of Foreign Affairs, and General Henri Guisan.

Book Recasting Bourgeois Europe

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles S. Maier
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2015-10-27
  • ISBN : 1400873703
  • Pages : 681 pages

Download or read book Recasting Bourgeois Europe written by Charles S. Maier and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Maier, one of the most prominent contemporary scholars of European history, published Recasting Bourgeois Europe as his first book in 1975. Based on extensive archival research, the book examines how European societies progressed from a moment of social vulnerability to one of political and economic stabilization. Arguing that a common trajectory calls for a multi country analysis, Maier provides a comparative history of three European nations and argues that they did not simply return to a prewar status quo, but achieved a new balance of state authority and interest group representation. While most previous accounts presented the decade as a prelude to the Depression and dictatorships, Maier suggests that the stabilization of the 1920s, vulnerable as it was, foreshadowed the more enduring political stability achieved after World War II. The immense and ambitious scope of this book, its ability to follow diverse histories in detail, and its effort to explain stabilization—and not just revolution or breakdown—have made it a classic of European history.
