The Marxist view that the Revolution was a bourgeois and capitalist revolution has been questioned by Anglo-Saxon revisionists like Alfred Cobban and William Doyle as well as a French school of criticism headed by François Furet. Today revisionism is the dominant interpretation of the Revolution both in the academic world and among the educated public. Against this conception, this book reasserts the view that the Revolution - the capital event of the modern age - was indeed a capitalist and bourgeois revolution. Based on an analysis of the latest historical scholarship as well as on knowledge of Marxist theories of the transition from feudalism to capitalism, the work confutes the main arguments and contentions of the revisionist school while laying out a narrative of the causes and unfolding of the Revolution from the eighteenth century to the Napoleonic Age.

Pour tenter de justifier - au niveau idéologique - cette tentative politique, les économistes apologétiques ont élaboré une politique économique, modèle visant à rendre cohérente la politique menée par l'État bourgeois au niveau économique. L'objet de ce livre n'est pas tant de critiquer cette élaboration - d'un point de vue de classe - mais d'en dénoncer les contradictions internes. Derrière l'apparente rigueur du modèle, en effet, s'engouffrent les sophismes et tautologies caractéristiques de l'économie vulgaire, qui trouvent leur source dans les contradictions inhérentes au mode de production capitaliste, que ces économistes tentent de justifier.

While most previous accounts presented the decade as a prelude to the Depression and dictatorships, Maier suggests that the stabilization of the 1920s, vulnerable as it was, foreshadowed the more enduring political stability achieved after World War II.
