Book excerpt: This book summarizes the methods and concepts of Statistical Implicative Analysis (SIA), created by Régis Gras in the 1980s to study, in a new way, the behavioural responses of French pupils to mathematics tests. Using a multidimensional, non-symmetrical data analysis method, SIA crosses a set of subjects or objects with a set of variables. It effectively complements traditional correlational and psychometric methods. SIA, through its various extensions, is today presented as a broad Artificial Intelligence method aimed at extracting trends and possible causalities in the form of rules, from a set of variables. It is based on the unlikeliness of the existence of these relationships, i.e. on the relative weakness of their counter-examples compared to what chance alone would produce. It establishes a dual topological relationship between the set of subjects and the set of variables. Many applications of this approach, driving forces or crucibles for the development of SIA, have concerned and still concern various fields such as didactics, evaluation and assessment, psychology, sociology, medicine, biology, economics, art history, and others. Dans ce travail qui porte sur la place des concepts de la didactique des sciences dans la formation des professeurs de lycée et collège en Sciences de la Vie et de la Terre en France et au Gabon, notre objectif était de voir dans quelles mesures les résultats de cette recherche en didactique sont repris dans cette dernière. Cette recherche a été menée en trois phases : l'analyse des plans de formation des établissements de l'échantillon, l'analyse des mémoires professionnels qui sont des écrits destinés à l'étude des questions professionnelles et qui reposent sur l'interaction des savoirs formalisés produits par les recherches et les savoirs pratiques que chacun peut se construire par ses propres expériences et l'analyse des entretiens semi directifs menés auprès des formateurs en didactique dans ces établissements. L'analyse des plans de formation des lUFMs en France a montré une absence du mot « didactique », mais la présence de modules qui pourraient être rattachés à la didactique des sciences. D'après les résultats obtenus grâce, entre autre, à l'Analyse Statistique Implicative (A.S.I.), il semble que lorsque les mémoires professionnelles s'inscrivent dans le champ de la didactique, les conceptions des élèves, sont le seul concept qui revient systématiquement dans ces derniers. C'est d'ailleurs ce concept qui figure au programme de tous les ILJFMs de l'échantillon. Les mémoires professionnels produits à l'ENS de Libreville s'inscrivent dans le champ des SVT. Et dans cet établissement où la didactique est bien distincte de la pédagogie dans le plan de formation, les entretiens menés ont montré que derrière le mot « didactique » c'est plutôt la pédagogie qui est enseignée tandis qu'en France, les formateurs nous ont affirmé que dans les IUFM, la didactique ne s'enseigne pas, « elle apparaît ».

Using a wide array of images from popular magazines of the day, Lou Charnon-Deutsch finds that women were typically presented in ways that were reassuring to the emerging bourgeois culture. Charnon-Deutsch organizes the 190 images reproduced in this book into six broad categories, or &"fictions of the feminine&": she reads women's bodies as a romantic symbol of beauty or evil, as a privileged link with the natural order, as a font of male inspiration, as a mouthpiece of bourgeois mores, as a focalized point of male fear and desire, and as an eroticized expression of Spanish exoticism and political ambitions. These imaginary visions of femininity, Charnon-Deutsch argues, were a response to, and also helped to create, gendered stereotypes by suggesting ideal feminine behavior and poses. Further, they comprised a reassuring &"between-male&" cultural medium that provided graphic validation of women's docile body for a culture enthralled with femininity. Integrating the fields of literature and cultural studies, Charnon-Deutsch's approach to this subject is unique. Many of the images collected here are available for the first time, and they represent only a fraction of the two thousand images Charnon-Deutsch collected during her research. This book will appeal to students of Spanish cultural studies and gender studies, as well as to art historians.
