Book The Gilson Lectures on Thomas Aquinas

Download or read book The Gilson Lectures on Thomas Aquinas written by and published by PIMS. This book was released on 2008 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few men of modern times have influenced the study of the medieval past as profoundly as Professor Etienne Gilson. By the encyclopaedic range of his writings, teaching, lectures, and personal contacts, by his sensitive vision of Christian culture, present and past, and by the brave new ventures on which he embarked, he, as few others, is responsible for the strength and diversity of medieval studies in North America and Europe. In recognition of his achievement and to continue his work, the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies commissioned an annual lecture to develop areas of his interest and expertise. Since 1979, there have been twenty four lectures given by senior medievalists. Among the distinguished contributors to the series are fellows of the Institute, past and present, Leonard E. Boyle, Jocelyn Hillgarth, Edouard Jeauneau, James K. McConica, M. Michèle Mulchahey, Joseph Owens, Walter H. Principe, James P. Reilly, Brian Stock, Edward A. Synan, and James A. Weispheipl, as well as such eminent scholars from Canada, Europe, and the United States, as Marcia Colish, Giles Constable, William J. Courtenay, Paul Dutton, Mark D. Jordan, F. Donald Logan, Karl F. Morrison, John D. North, Francis Oakley, Jaroslav Pelikan, Otto Hermann Pesch, Kenneth Schmitz, and John F. Wippel. To mark the thirtieth anniversary of Gilson's death and seventy-five years of scholarly publishing at the Institute, we are reprinting the nine Gilson lectures devoted to Thomas Aquinas.

Book An Essay on Faith Reason and Human Nature

Download or read book An Essay on Faith Reason and Human Nature written by Nicolas G. Mertens and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discusses questions such as, what is knowledge, what qualifies as knowledge, and what does not; what does it mean to say, "I know, I understand," what is truth, and what is certainty? When can we affirm and be certain that -- I know this or that, this or that is a universal truth I can rely upon, and I know that it so because I have a method and at least one criterion to determine that this or that is indeed a universal truth. Furthermore, how do knowledge and understanding compare with belief: Are there evidences so compelling that, in certain cases, propositions of the form 'I know that X' are indeed expressions of knowledge, and in other cases merely expressions of opinions and/or beliefs? Can the words 'belief', 'understanding', and 'knowledge' be used interchangeably? And by the way, what role does reason play in our endeavours to seek knowledge? And what role does human nature play in that endeavour?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all interpreters of Cartesian philosophy have hitherto focused on the epistemological aspect of Descartes' thought. In his Cartesian Theodicy, Janowski demonstrates that Descartes' epistemological problems are merely rearticulations of theological questions. For example, Descartes' attempt to define the role of God in man's cognitive fallibility is a reiteration of an old argument that points out the incongruity between the existence of God and evil, and his pivotal question `whence error?' is shown here to be a rephrasing of the question `whence evil?' The answer Descartes gives in the Meditations is actually a reformulation of the answer found in St. Augustine's De Libero Arbitrio and the Confessions. The influence of St. Augustine on Descartes can also be detected in the doctrine of eternal truths which, within the context of the 17th-century debates over the question of the nature of divine freedom, caused Descartes to ally himself with the Augustinian Oratorians against the Jesuits. Both in his Cartesian Theodicy as well as his Index Augustino-Cartesian, Textes et Commentaire Janowski shows that the entire Cartesian metaphysics can - and should - be read within the context of Augustinian thought.

Book F lix Ravaisson French Philosophy in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book F lix Ravaisson French Philosophy in the Nineteenth Century written by Mark Sinclair and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-29 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Félix Ravaisson's French Philosophy in the Nineteenth Century is one of the most influential and pivotal texts of modern French thought. Commissioned by the Minister of Public Instruction as one of a series of reports to record the progress of the French sciences and humanities for Paris' second world fair, the 1867 Exposition universelle d'arts et d'industrie, it was published with the others the following year. In the report Ravaisson argues, with verve and generosity, and with an unparalleled command of the century's intellectual developments, that the myriad voices in nineteenth-century French thinking were beginning to form a chorus, one that was advancing towards a new, more concrete form of spiritualist philosophy able to resist materialist, mechanist and sensualist doctrines while incorporating recent developments in the life-sciences. As Henri Bergson noted, it effected a "profound change of orientation in university philosophy" and for decades afterwards students learnt its concluding sections by heart in order to pass public examinations. Bergson's own Creative Evolution, which made him the world's most celebrated living philosopher at the end of the long nineteenth century, is, with its psychological interpretation of biological evolution, a direct expression of the new philosophical orientation that Ravaisson had divined in the report.

Book The God Who Is Beauty

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : James Clarke & Company

Download or read book The God Who Is Beauty written by Brendon Thomas Sammon and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the beginning was beauty, and beauty was with God, and beauty was God. If the tradition of divine names, that (in its Christian form) originates with Dionysius the Areopagite and includes among its ranks Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, and others, is correct in identifying God with the name beauty, then repurposing the Prologue to John's Gospel in this way seems hardly controversial. For if beauty is a divine name then not only is it fitting to say God is beautiful, but it is equally fitting to say that God is beauty itself. However, like most arguments from fittingness-that is to say, arguments whose veracity derives from the congruency, proportion, or harmony between the various elements of a proposition or idea rather than from some categoricallyhigher, or univocally determinate, logical necessity-the simplicity of its utterance stands in stark contrast to the complexity of its intelligible content. It is the aim of the present work is to explore what it means to say that beauty is a divine name.

Book Spheres of Philosophical Inquiry and the Historiography of Medieval Philosophy

Download or read book Spheres of Philosophical Inquiry and the Historiography of Medieval Philosophy written by John Inglis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1998-04-09 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent writers in the historiography of philosophy have placed into question the paradigms that structure our historical writing. This volume continues this discussion with particular reference to medieval philosophy. Inglis shows that the modern historiography of medieval philosophy had its origins in certain nineteenth-century German reactions to Kantian idealism. He uncovers the philosophical, political, and theological origins of how we have come to interpret medieval philosophy according to the standard spheres of philosophy. By keeping such historiography in mind and paying attention to the context in which the medieval actually wrote, Inglis raises serious questions concerning the accuracy of the dominant model and proposes an historically sensitive alternative. The genealogy will interest medievalists and intellectual historians, the alternative model will interest historians of medieval philosophy, and theology.
