Drawn to the ideals of the French Revolution, Renouvier came to recognize that the free will and civil liberties he supported were essential to the pursuit of science, contrary to the ideologies of positivists and socialists who would restrict liberty in the name of science. He struggled against monarchy and religious authority in the period up through 1848 and defended a liberal, secular form of political organization at a critical turning point in French history, the beginning of the Third Republic. As Warren Schmaus argues, Renouvier’s work provides an example of one way in which philosophy of science can succeed in bringing about change in political life—by critiquing political ideologies that falsely claim absolute certainty on religious, scientific, or any other grounds. Liberty and the Pursuit of Knowledge explores the understudied relationship between Renouvier’s philosophy of science and his political philosophy, shedding new light on the significance of his thought for the history of philosophy.

L’auteur, Charles Renouvier, l’un des philosophes français les plus importants du XIXe siècle, est en effet un philosophe engagé avant la lettre. Grand militant de la cause républicaine, il s’en est fait le défenseur en même temps que le penseur dans un moment fécond de l’histoire de France, la décennie 1870, qui voit l’installation et l’enracinement durable, cette fois, de la République, la IIIe du nom. Il a fondé pour ce faire une revue, en 1872, la Critique philosophique, qu’il rédigeait presque à lui seul et qui accompagne, mois après mois, la difficile gestation du nouveau régime. Constatant la confusion et le flottement des idées du personnel républicain dans un contexte particulièrement tendu et troublé, il s’efforce de dégager une doctrine cohérente de la conduite à tenir vis-à-vis des institutions qui se cherchent. Une doctrine qu’il appelle justement "criticisme", en référence à la pensée kantienne. Dans cet esprit, il s’emploie aussi bien à éclaircir les principes fondamentaux engagés dans l’entreprise qu’à définir une méthode d’action politique ou à clarifier les enjeux des luttes politiques du moment, sans oublier de plaider pour les réformes qui s’imposent. Des modes de scrutin aux rapports entre l’Église et l’État, en passant par la décentralisation ou l’organisation de l’enseignement, ce sont toutes les questions brûlantes auxquelles est confronté le régime naissant qui se trouvent examinées à la lumière de leurs enjeux théoriques. Cet exercice de philosophie appliquée compose ainsi un véritable "traité de la République" qui éclaire de l’intérieur la signification d’un processus trop souvent réduit à un heureux produit des circonstances. Il permet d’y reconnaître un authentique moment philosophique.
