Book excerpt: “Its relevance lashes you across the face.” —Stephen Metcalf, The Los Angeles Times • “A redemptive book, one that wills the reader to believe, even in a time of despair.” —Roger Lowenstein, The Washington Post A haunting tale of human resilience and hope in the face of unrelieved horror, Albert Camus' iconic novel about an epidemic ravaging the people of a North African coastal town is a classic of twentieth-century literature. The townspeople of Oran are in the grip of a deadly plague, which condemns its victims to a swift and horrifying death. Fear, isolation and claustrophobia follow as they are forced into quarantine. Each person responds in their own way to the lethal disease: some resign themselves to fate, some seek blame, and a few, like Dr. Rieux, resist the terror. An immediate triumph when it was published in 1947, The Plague is in part an allegory of France's suffering under the Nazi occupation, and a timeless story of bravery and determination against the precariousness of human existence.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Camus

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Camus written by Edward J. Hughes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-26 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albert Camus is one of the iconic figures of twentieth-century French literature, one of France's most widely read modern literary authors and one of the youngest winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature. As the author of L'Etranger and the architect of the notion of 'the Absurd' in the 1940s, he shot to prominence in France and beyond. His work nevertheless attracted hostility as well as acclaim and he was increasingly drawn into bitter political controversies, especially the issue of France's place and role in the country of his birth, Algeria. Most recently, postcolonial studies have identified in his writings a set of preoccupations ripe for revisitation. Situating Camus in his cultural and historical context, this 2007 Companion explores his best-selling novels, his ambiguous engagement with philosophy, his theatre, his increasingly high-profile work as a journalist and his reflection on ethical and political questions that continue to concern readers today.

Book La Peste

Download or read book Plaga La Peste Negra Plague The Black Death written by Janey Levy and published by Gareth Stevens Publishing LLLP. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plague, aptly known as the Black Death, swept through Europe in the 1300s, killing more than 20 million people. Not only deadly but incredibly painful, the disease was characterized by black boils all over the body that oozed blood and pus. While providing more details about the plague, this book, an asset to any social studies collection, also addresses where the lethal outbreak originated and whether it could return. Aided by striking illustrations, sidebars, and fact boxes, readers will discover the conditions in the Middle Ages that made it possible for such an appalling disease to spread so easily.
