Book excerpt: This special issue begins with an analysis of the pros and cons of freedom of the human condition achieved by West Indians' ability to have multiple identifications--to "play the field," yet sustain a strong personal, participatory national identity. Next the ties that bind Africans together are discussed, such as common blood lines, common ethno-cultural experience, common collective memory, and common African origins. The third article explores the complex relationships among diasporic identity home, and marginality in the context of Rastafari philosophy and practice, followed by an article that views the formation of the uniquely Afro-Jamaican identity of "Colón Man" through oppositional narratives in Michael Thelwell's The Harder They Come. The issue concludes with a discussion of the geopolitics of identity through the popular literature, censorship, and the Spanish Media.

Book Spanish Republicans and the Second World War

Download or read book Spanish Republicans and the Second World War written by Jonathan Whitehead and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish Republicans and the Second World War tells the stories of the 500,000 Spanish Republicans that fled across the Pyrenees in 1939 as Catalonia fell to Franco’s victorious army in the final weeks of the Civil War. Many of the exiles played an active part in the Second World War. Some joined the French and British armed forces and saw action in various theatres including Africa and Europe (both in 1940 and after D-Day). In August 1944, Spanish Republicans in the La Nueve Company of General Leclerc’s Deuxième Blindée were the first Allied troops into Paris during the liberation of the French capital. Those that had remained in Vichy France were active in the early days of the French Resistance, and Republican Maquis also played a significant part in the liberation of the south-west of France in 1944. Those who fought the Axis troops in Spain during the Civil War and then again in France assumed that once the Allies had defeated the Nazis, they would launch a military campaign to overthrow Franco’s government in Spain. In October 1944, a force of thousands of Spanish Maquis took part in Operación Reconquista, the invasion of the Valley of Aran on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees. Their declared aim was to trigger a popular uprising and force the Allies to intervene against Franco’s dictatorship. Whitehead also examines the role of the Spanish volunteers of the División Azul who swore an oath of allegiance to Hitler and fought with the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front; the role of the master double-agent Garbo, who played a crucial part in the success of D-Day; the strategic importance of Gibraltar; and the activities of the British diplomatic corps and secret services in resisting Hitler’s plans to invade the Iberian Peninsula.

Book The Unfinished Song of Francisco Urondo

Download or read book The Unfinished Song of Francisco Urondo written by Hernan Fontanet and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unfinished Song of Francisco Urondo: When Poetry is Not Enough is a comprehensive, well-written, documented, and carefully developed study of the literary work and life of Francisco Urondo, an Argentine poet, intellectual, activist, cultural promoter, revolutionary, and clandestine guerilla member who died in 1976 fighting for a cause in which he believed, against the oppressive Argentine Military Junta. This methodical but never mechanistic work shows how life events, cultural milieu, political movements, and world circumstances interacted and impacted Urondo’s temperament to produce his poetic voice, his prose, and his theatrical works. By studying the man, we get closer to his poetry. With his poetry, the author makes a compelling case for understanding the man. Francisco Urondo’s life, work, and praxis were varied, agonizing at times, and always marked by imperatives. This book fills a significant lacuna in the scholarship on the work of this worthy, yet neglected and under-studied, writer. Readers of this book will come away with not only a deepened understanding of the man and his writings but also of a key period in recent Argentine political, social, and intellectual history.

Book Twenty First Century Arab and African Diasporas in Spain Portugal and Latin America

Download or read book Twenty First Century Arab and African Diasporas in Spain Portugal and Latin America written by Cristián H. Ricci and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers the Arabic and African diasporas through the underexplored Afro-Hispanic, Luso-Africans, and Mahjari (South American and Mexican authors of Arab descent) experiences in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. Utilizing both established and emerging approaches, the authors explore the ways in which individual writers and artists negotiate the geographical, cultural, and historical parameters of their own diasporic trajectories influenced by their particular locations at home and elsewhere. At the same time, this volume sheds light on issues related to Spain, Portugal, and Latin American racial, ethnic, and sexual boundaries; the appeal of images of the Middle East and Africa in the contemporary marketplace; and the role of Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American economic crunches in shaping attitudes towards immigration. This collection of thought-provoking chapters extends the concepts of diaspora and transnationalism, forcing the reader to reassess their present limitations as interpretive tools. In the process, Afro-Hispanic, Afro-Portuguese, and Mahjaris are rendered visible as national actors and transnational citizens.
