Di questa "nuova geografia del lavoro" Enrico Moretti, docente di economia all'università di Berkeley, traccia una mappa dettagliata con sguardo lucido e puntuali rilevazioni sul campo: visita città in ascesa, che vedono fiorire un virtuoso intreccio di buoni impieghi, talento e investimenti, e città in declino; passeggia per le vie di Pioneer Square, quartiere trendy di Seattle, e per quelle di Berlino, la capitale più attraente d'Europa, ma anche una metropoli sorprendentemente povera; e scopre che ogni posto di lavoro creato in centri di eccellenza dell'innovazione ne genera almeno cinque in altri settori produttivi, e tutti retribuiti meglio che altrove. Tanto che oggi, ci dice, "il modo più efficace per creare posti per i lavoratori meno qualificati è attrarre imprese hi-tech con dipendenti altamente qualificati". In questo nuovo scenario l'Italia rischia di diventare per l'Europa quello che la terza America è per gli Stati Uniti, ovvero un insieme di città e distretti industriali in declino lento ma irreversibile, come dimostra la scomparsa di due industrie chiave, quella del computer e quella della farmaceutica. Capire, quindi, perché le differenze economiche tra città e regioni, anziché diminuire - com'era nelle attese di molti -, continuano ad aumentare, e perché le imprese e i lavoratori più creativi si siano concentrati in determinati luoghi e non in altri, è di vitale importanza per decifrare e orientare il futuro della nostra economia.
