Book excerpt: Mario Paz has, in the Romantic Agony, acutely analyzed the effect of the traditions of Byron and De Sade upon poets and painters from 1800 to 1900. It is the analysis of a mood in literature. The mood may ve been transient, but it was widespread, and it was expressed in dreams of "luxurious cruelties," "fatal women," corpse-passions, and the sinful agonies of delight. Professo Praz has described the whole Romantic literature under one of its most characteristic aspects, that of erotic sensibility.

Book excerpt: An updated and revised look at the truth behind America's housing and mortgage bubbles In the summer of 2007, the subprime empire that Wall Street had built all came crashing down. On average, fifty lenders a month were going bust-and the people responsible for the crisis included not just unregulated loan brokers and con artists, but also investment bankers and home loan institutions traditionally perceived as completely trustworthy. Chain of Blame chronicles this incredible disaster, with a specific focus on the players who participated in such a fundamentally flawed fiasco. In it, authors Paul Muolo and Mathew Padilla reveal the truth behind how this crisis occurred, including what individuals and institutions were doing during this critical time, and who is ultimately responsible for what happened. Discusses the latest revelations in the housing and mortgage crisis, including the SEC's charging of Angelo Mozilo Two well-regarded financial journalists familiar with the events that have taken place chronicle the crisis in detail, showing what happened as well as what lies ahead Discusses how the world's largest investment banks, homeowners, lenders, credit rating agencies, underwriters, and investors all became entangled in the subprime mess Intriguing and informative, Chain of Blame is a compelling story of greed and avarice, one in which many are responsible, but few are willing to admit their mistakes.

Download or read book The Making of the Scottish Countryside written by M. L. Parry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1980, this book examines the evolution of the Scottish landscape from pre-historic times to the mid-nineteenth century. It considers the way in which the structural base of agriculture and the changing farming ‘system’ came to alter the Scottish rural landscape. This book, with its focus on the underlying landscape processes, gives a developmental view of landscape change. It therefore considers the crucial question of the rate and pace of landscape change and argues that the Scottish landscape was not the product of a few brief phases of quite rapid development but rather the result of a continual and gradual process of change. It also looks at the regional variation of landscape change and establishes the importance of regional linkages in the diffusion of ideas especially in new technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated and adapted by Patricia Claxton Volume VIII of the Canadian Centenary Series Now available as e-books for the first time, the Canadian Centenary Series is a comprehensive nineteen-volume history of the peoples and lands which form Canada. Although the series is designed as a unified whole so that no part of the story is left untold, each volume is complete in itself. Professor Ouellet traces the impact of some of the changes wrought in Lower Canada at the close of the eighteenth century, after thirty years of British rule, to offer an analysis of the historical roots of nationalism and the traditional struggle for social change in the province of Quebec. First published in 1980, Fernand Ouellet’s important contribution to the Canadian Centenary Series is available here as an e-book for the first time.
Download or read book Irish in Ontario 1st Edition written by Donald Harman Akenson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1984-08-01 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as one of the most important books on social sciences of the last fifty years by the Social Sciences Federation of Canada. Akenson argues that, despite the popular conception of the Irish as a city people, those who settled in Ontario were primarily rural and small-town dwellers. Though it is often claimed that the experience of the Irish in their homeland precluded their successful settlement on the frontier in North America, Akenson's research proves that the Irish migrants to Ontario not only chose to live chiefly in the hinterlands, but that they did so with marked success. Akenson also suggests that by using Ontario as an "historical laboratory" it is possible to make valid assessments of the real differences between Irish Protestants and Irish Catholics, characteristics which he contends are much more precisely measurable in the neutral environment of central Canada than in the turbulent Irish homeland. While Akenson is careful not to over-generalize his findings, he contends that the case of Ontario seriously calls into question conventional beliefs about the cultural limitations of the Irish Catholics not only in Canada but throughout North America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This translation of Mukhtasar Minhaj Al-Qasidin is an abridged version of ibn Al-Jawzi's summary of Imam Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali's well known book, Ihya Ulum Ad-Din.In Imam Al-Ghazalis Ihya Ulum Ad-Din (The Revitalization of Sciences of Religion) apparently has some defects that only scholars can realize, such as the narrations which have been traced back to the prophet while they are fabricated or inauthentic. Therefore, Imam Ibn Al-Jawziyy compiled this book free of those defects, while retaining the benefits on the original book. In this book the author relied only on authentic and famous narrations, and removed from or added to the original book what he seemed necessary. This book is divided into four chapters: Chapter One: Acts of WorshipChapter Two: CustomsChapter Three: Destructive FlawsChapter Four: Means of SalvationEach one of these four chapters consists of numerous titles and sub-titles.
