  • Author : A. L. Lloyd
  • Publisher : Faber & Faber
  • Release : 2008-09
  • ISBN : 9780571245475
  • Pages : 434 pages

Download or read book Folk Song in England written by A. L. Lloyd and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A seminal work by one of the most influential figures of the English folk revival of the 1950s, Folk Song in England (1967) is an expansive account of the development of English traditional song, from the very oldest, ritual verse, through epic balladry, to the development of lyrical song in the industrial era. In a unique and ambitious approach, Lloyd marries the tradition of folk-song scholarship, largely derived from Cecil Sharp, with the radical historiography of E. P. Thompson, and in so doing produces a work of exceptional insight. In particular, his defining of 'industrial folk song' reveals traditional verse as an ebullient, living expression of the working people, perfectly adaptable to reflect their ways and conditions of life.

Download or read book Harmony in Discord written by Laura Martin and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume assembles the selected proceedings of a conference held at the University of Glasgow in May 1999 on women writers from L.A.V. Gottsched to Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. These women wrote at a period when writing by women first began to be a strong force in the German-speaking public sphere. As Women's Studies enters the twenty-first century, these writers can be approached from a variety of angles, which reveal the complexity of their participation in the public discourse from which they are also partially excluded by reason of their gender. As the women writers investigated here largely eschewed outright rebellion against the norms of femininity, their voices might be said to be in harmony - different but not contrary - but moments of discordance can be made out as well. It has been the (explicit or implicit) task of the contributors to this volume to pick out this other voice in contexts where it has not been heard, whether because it has been drowned out by louder voices or because its difference has not before seemed worthy of note.

Book The Life of Arthur W Pink

Download or read book The Life of Arthur W Pink written by Iain Hamish Murray and published by Banner of Truth. This book was released on 2004 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pink's biography, first written by Iain Murray in 1981, is here revised and enlarged with the benefit of new material, including some of Pink's own re-discovered manuscripts. It is the heart-stirring and compelling story of a strong, complex character a 'Mr Valiant-for-truth' who was also a humble Christian. In 1922 a small magazine Studies in the Scriptures began to circulate among Christians in the English-speaking world. It pointed its readership back to an understanding of the gospel that had rarely been heard since the days of C. H. Spurgeon. At the time it seemed as inconsequential as its author, but subsequently Arthur Pink's writings became a major element in the recovery of expository preaching and biblical living. Born in England in 1886, A. W. Pink was the little-known pastor of churches in the United States and Australia before he finally returned to his homeland in 1934. There he died almost unnoticed in 1952.

Book Evangelicalism in Britain 1935 1995

Download or read book Evangelicalism in Britain 1935 1995 written by Oliver R. Barclay and published by IVP. This book was released on 1997 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I offered Christ to them'. Thus John Wesley described his message. His words focus on the heart of evangelicalism as a living, active movement, centred on Christ. Oliver Barclay offers a first-hand account of some momentous years of British evangelicalism. This is the work of an active participant, providing a unique perspective on a period that has shaped the church and determined its future. Here are revealing insights into the contributions of such major figures as D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Douglas Johnson, John Stott, William Still, J. I. Packer, Billy Graham, Francis Schaeffer, Hans Rookmaaker and Donald MacKay. This broad-brush assessment also illuminates a variety of significant movements such as the Evangelical Alliance, Keswick, the Student Christian Movement, the Oxford Group/MRA, the Fellowship of the Kingdom, the new churches, TEAR Fund, and the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (formerly the Inter-Varsity Fellowship). Dr Barclay's testimony provides timely insights into the nature of evangelicalism, both as a movement and a confessional stance uniquely rooted in classical Christianity.

Book excerpt: Robert Shannon was a devoted scientist on the brink of a medical discovery of great importance. He had no time or inclination for women . . . or for any of the world outside his laboratory. But Jean Law had other plans for him. Strictly brought up by narrow-minded parents, confined by her hospital lectures and her dingy boarding-house, she hardly knew the fires that burned beneath her calm exterior . . . except that they burned for Robert Shannon. She knew she had to have him for herself, and, despite her family’s religious beliefs , their shocked disapproval, and all she had been taught was her destiny, she was determined to fight for him. In the magnificent narrative tradition of The Citadel, The Stars Look Down and Cronin’s other classic novels, Shannon’s Way is a great book by a much-loved author.
