Book Absolutely Postcolonial

Download or read book Absolutely Postcolonial written by Peter Hallward and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book provides an incisive critique of well-established positions in postcolonial theory and a dramatic expansion in the range of interpretative tools available. Peter Hallward gives substantial readings of four significant writers whose work invites, to varying degrees, a singular interpretation of postcolonialism: Edouard Glissant, Charles Johnson, Mohammed Dib, and Severo Sarduy. Using a singular interpretation of postcolonialism is central to the argument this book makes, and to understanding the postcolonial paradigm.

Book Le roman alg rien de langue arabe Lectures critiques

Download or read book Le roman alg rien de langue arabe Lectures critiques written by Mohamed Daoud and published by Crasc. This book was released on 2002-12-30 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the world they are known as Berbers, but they prefer to call themselves Imazighen, or “free people.” The claim to this unique cultural identity has been felt most acutely in Algeria in the Kabylia region, where an Amazigh consciousness gradually emerged after WWII. This is a valuable model for other Amazigh movements in North Africa, where the existence of an Amazigh language and culture is denied or dismissed in countries such as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. By tracing the cultural production of the Kabyle people—their songs, oral traditions, and literature—from the early 1930s to the end of the twentieth century, Fazia Aïtel shows how they have defined their own culture over time, both within Algeria and in its diaspora. She analyzes the role of Amazigh identity in the works of novelists such as Mouloud Feraoun, Tahar Djaout, and Assia Djebar, and she investigates the intersection of Amazigh consciousness and the Beur movement in France. She also addresses the political and social role of the Kabyles in Algeria and in France, where after independence it was easier for the Berber community to express and organize itself. Ultimately, Aïtel argues that the Amazigh literary tradition is founded on dual priorities: the desire to foster a genuine dialogue while retaining a unique culture.

Book Transnational Spaces and Identities in the Francophone World

Download or read book Transnational Spaces and Identities in the Francophone World written by Hafid Gafaiti and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dissolution of the French Empire and the ensuing rush of immigration have led to the formation of diasporas and immigrant cultures that have transformed French society and the immigrants themselves. Transnational Spaces and Identities in the Francophone World examines the impact of this postcolonial immigration on identity in France and in the Francophone world, which has encompassed parts of Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the Americas. Immigrants bear cultural traditions within themselves, transform “host” communities, and are, in turn, transformed. These migrations necessarily complicate ideals of national literature, culture, and history, forcing a reexamination and a rearticulation of these ideals. Exploring a variety of texts informed by these transnational conceptions of identity and space, the contributors to this volume reveal the vitality of Francophone studies within a broad range of disciplines, periods, and settings. They remind us that the idea and reality of Francophonie is not a late twentieth-century phenomenon but something that grows out of long-term interactions between colonizer and colonized and between peoples of different nationalities, ethnicities, and religions. Truly interdisciplinary, this collection engages conceptions of identity with respect to their physical, geographic, ethnic, and imagined realities.

Download or read book Algeria Revisited written by Rabah Aissaoui and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 5 July 1962, Algeria became an independent nation, bringing to an end 132 years of French colonial rule. Algeria Revisited provides an opportunity to critically re-examine the colonial period, the iconic war of decolonisation that brought it to an end and the enduring legacies of these years. Given the apparent centrality of violence in this history, this volume asks how we might re-imagine conflict so as to better understand its forms and functions in both the colonial and postcolonial eras. It considers the constantly shifting balance of power between different groups in Algeria and how these have been used to re-fashion colonial relationships. Turning to the postcolonial period, the book explores the challenges Algerians have faced as they have sought to forge an identity as an independent postcolonial nation and how has this process been represented. The roles played by memory and forgetting are highlighted as part of the ongoing efforts by both Algeria and France to grapple with the complex legacies of their prolonged and tumultuous relationship. This interdisciplinary volume sheds light on these and other issues, offering new insights into the history, politics, society and culture of modern Algeria and its historical relationship with France.

Book Translating Pain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Madelaine Hron
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2010-10-23
  • ISBN : 144269324X
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Translating Pain written by Madelaine Hron and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2010-10-23 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the post-Cold War, post-9/11 era, the immigrant experience has changed dramatically. Despite the recent successes of immigrant and world literatures, there has been little scholarship on how the hardships of immigration are conveyed in immigrant narratives. Translating Pain fills this gap by examining literature from Muslim North Africa, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe to reveal the representation of immigrant suffering in fiction. Applying immigrant psychology to literary analysis, Madelaine Hron examines the ways in which different forms of physical and psychological pain are expressed in a wide variety of texts. She juxtaposes post-colonial and post-communist concerns about immigration, and contrasts Muslim world views with those of Caribbean creolité and post-Cold War ethics. Demonstrating how pain is translated into literature, she explores the ways in which it also shapes narrative, culture, history, and politics. A compelling and accessible study, Translating Pain is a groundbreaking work of literary and postcolonial studies.
