La novela como género-tipo de dos períodos En la primera parte de esta obra traté del romanticismo en Francia a grandes rasgos, fijándome solo en las tendencias más marcadas, en las figuras más significativas y las corrientes más caudales. Necesario me fue omitir nombres y hechos que tienen valor, pero que darían a estos estudios proporciones exageradas. Claro es que en la selección de hechos y nombres influye poderosamente el criterio personal, y a él he obedecido, hablando más despacio de lo que a mi juicio revestía superior importancia; pero, a título de justificación de mis preferencias, ante quienes estén algo versados en las tres fases, germinal, expansiva y decadente, del movimiento romántico, alegaré que las figuras principales para mí fueron las que lo son para todos: Chateaubriand, madama de Staël, Lamartine, Alfredo de Musset, Víctor Hugo, Alejandro Dumas, Jorge Sand, Teófilo Gautier. En España suenan familiarmente tales nombres, aunque su biografía, su crítica y sus escritos sean harto menos conocidos de lo que suele afirmarse; aunque se les juzgue mucho de memoria y de oídas y su labor literaria no haya sido expresamente estudiada hasta el día, que yo sepa, por pluma española, a excepción de la de Menéndez y Pelayo (que consideró al romanticismo francés desde el punto de vista de las ideas estéticas), y aunque el olvido en que cae lo moderno (especialmente lo moderno, al parecer más accesible) vaya envolviendo, si no los nombres, los fastos y las glorias de esa gran generación tan vibrante, tan apasionada, que entre los accesos de su calentura acariciaba aquella ilusión magnífica que doró los albores del pasado siglo, ilusión de poesía y de libertad. Entendí también que el movimiento romántico no se explicaría sin ciertos factores que a él concurrieron; por eso traté de la reacción religiosa, del neocatolicismo, representado por nombres tan claros como los de Chateaubriand, Veuillot, Bonald, de Maistre, Ozanam y Lamennais. La transformación de los estudios históricos por el advenimiento de la escuela pintoresca, a que dio vida el genio de Walter Scott, merecía capítulo aparte, y se lo consagré. Por último, cité la aparición de otra forma literaria, que, en rigor, es patrimonio del siglo XIX: la crítica, con su doble carácter objetivo e intuitivo, tema sobre el cual habrá que insistir, pues requiere mayor espacio, y cada día se impone con superiores títulos a la reflexión y hasta al sentimiento estético.
