Download or read book Le Concept de libert au Canada l poque des R volutions atlantiques 1776 1838 written by Michel Ducharme and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Narrating Europe written by Michael Gehler and published by Nomos Verlag. This book was released on 2022-10-26 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume in a much praised series on The French Revolution and the Creation of Modern Political Culture examines the way in which the Revolution has been portrayed in European thought and its impact upon the development of political philosophy in the nineteenth century. Opening with the influence of Burke and other contemporaries of the Revolution and the ensuing debate over the question "Why the Terror?", this volume explores such diverse themes as the legacy of the Revolution on the political and social evolution of Germany, England, Italy and Russia; the crisis it brought about in the Catholic Church; and the difficulties encountered in determining the end of the Revolution. By showing that the upheaval in European politics and philosophy caused by the French Revolution continued to shape nations, peoples and thought, the texts brought together in this volume permit a better understanding of the event's extraordinary complexity.

Book excerpt: Arguing that the French have cherished and demonized Jacobinism at the same time--their hearts following Robespierre, but their heads turning toward Benjamin Constant--Rosanvallon traces the long history of resistance to Jacobinism, including the creation of associations and unions and the implementation of elements of decentralization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spirit of the Laws not only systematizes the foundational ideas of “separation of powers” and “balances and checks,” it provides the decisive response to the question of whether power in the nation-state can be limited in the aftermath of the Westphalian settlement of 1648. It describes a civilizational change through which power becomes domesticated, with built-in resistance to attempts to absolutize (or make total) political power. As such, it is the Bible of modern politics, now made more accessible to English readers than it ever has been.
Download or read book La vie priv e l re du num rique written by REY Bénédicte and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2012-09-05 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book On Liberty Ed Alexander written by John Stuart Mill and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 1999-03-08 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mill predicted that “[t]he Liberty is likely to survive longer than anything else that I have written … because the conjunction of [Harriet Taylor’s] mind with mine has rendered it a kind of philosophic text-book of a single truth, which the changes progressively taking place in modern society tend to bring out in ever greater relief.” Indeed, On Liberty is one of the most influential books ever written, and remains a foundational document for the understanding of vital political, philosophical and social issues. In addition to its many useful appendices, this new edition includes a chronology, bibliography, and a substantial introduction which outlines Mill’s life and works, and sets this central work of 1859 in the context of both his own intellectual development and of the play of ideas and political forces in Victorian society.
