Book excerpt: Many people today are thirsty for God and feel a desire for an intense, personal prayer life that is deep and ongoing. But they encounter obstacles that prevent them from following the path seriously, and especially from persevering on it. Time for God was written with these desires and difficulties in mind. In Time for God, author Jacques Philippe mainly concentrates on mental prayer: prayer that consists of facing God in solitude and silence for a time in order to enter into intimate, loving communion with him. Practicing this kind of prayer regularly is considered by all spiritual masters to be an indispensable path that gives access to genuine Christian life—a path to knowing and loving God that empowers us to respond to his call to holiness addressed to each individual. Philippe draws on years of experience as a spiritual guide to illuminate the fundamental principles of mental prayer and describes some common mistakes and misconceptions that can lead it astray. With simplicity and clarity he explains the foundational principles for a healthy prayer life and gives advice for overcoming the various obstacles that arise when one sets off on the path of interior prayer.

It is prayer that will give birth to all the renewals, healings, deep and fruitful transformations we all want for society today.... I am more and more convinced that everything comes from prayer and that, among the calls of the Spirit, this is the first and most urgent one we should respond to." Many have already benefited from Fr. Jacques’ best-selling book on prayer, Time for God. In Thirsting for Prayer, Fr. Jacques revisits some of the themes covered in that book and develops new insights that are both profound and practical. Moreover it has been a fine example of the quality of Pian-Benedectine codification and of its reform conducted after the Second Vatican Council.

Book Ecclesiastical Office and the Participation of the Lay Faithful in the Exercise of Sacred Power

Download or read book Ecclesiastical Office and the Participation of the Lay Faithful in the Exercise of Sacred Power written by Kevin Gillespie and published by Pontificia Univ. Gregoriana. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The parameters for the relationship between the ordained and the non-ordained in the Church's mission, particularly in the realm of public functioning and the power of jurisdiction, are set frequently by reference to a limiting interpretation of the formula of Lumen Gentium 10b, regarding the relationship of the common and ministerial priesthood. This study illustrates how the same formula emphasises the dynamic of mutual orientation that determines this relationship. This dynamic is illustrated by an exploration of theme of the common priesthood in scripture, theology and the magisterium. Two other themes are significant for a proper understanding of the mutual orientation in question: the origin and nature of the power of governance, and the personal or institutional nature of the power exercised in ecclesiastical office. Given the importance of ecclesiastical office as a juridical institution for the Church's public functioning, the theological-juridical category munus emerges as both unifying and orienting for the relationship between the ordained and non-ordained in the exercise of office. The study sustains that ecclesiastical offices have a primordial content based on the nature of one's sacramental participation in the priesthood of Christ, and the consequent participation in his threefold munera. This is significant for appointment to ecclesiastical office, its proper exercise, and the authoritative nature of public functioning.
