The war passages that readers find most disquieting are those in which God demands the total annihilation of the enemy without regard to gender, age, or military status. The ideology of the "ban," however, is only one among a range of attitudes towards war preserved in the ancient Israelite literary tradition. Applying insights from anthropology, comparative literature, and feminist studies, Niditch considers a wide spectrum of war ideologies in the Hebrew Bible, seeking in each case to discover why and how these views might have made sense to biblical writers, who themselves can be seen to wrestle with the ethics of violence. The study of war thus also illuminates the social and cultural history of Israel, as war texts are found to map the world views of biblical writers from various periods and settings. Reviewing ways in which modern scholars have interpreted this controversial material, Niditch sheds further light on the normative assumptions that shape our understanding of ancient Israel. More widely, this work explores how human beings attempt to justify killing and violence while concentrating on the tones, textures, meanings, and messages of a particular corpus in the Hebrew Scriptures.

A year earlier, the invasion of Iraq had taken place. The questions created by the outbreak of war prompted an urgency in the consideration of the topic. ACCTS, which sponsors international symposia in military ethics with officers from armed forces around the globe, provided ethicists and practitioners from within the military of both the U.S. and Great Britain. Hess and Martens also solicited papers from leading theologians and advocates representing pacifist and just-war views. They have succeeded in bringing together in this fine volume a group of Christians representing a wide range of perspectives to debate and discuss their heritage and biblical roots with regard to questions of war and its ethical dilemmas.

The film documents their tension-filled yet deep relationship. In the end, both have to make a decision as the mission where they live and work is scheduled for destruction and relocation. Father Gabriel chooses nonviolence to combat the forces of evil; Mendoza chooses to fight for the rights of the natives. Most of us don't need Hollywood to bring the issues of war and peace home for us. As people of faith, we are faced daily with our participation in violent actions, our willingness to allow violence in the world to continue, and our response to violence in our lives. The Bible does not give us an easy answer. Sometimes we hear ancient Israel on its march through the promised land. Other times we hear Jesus unwilling to raise a hand against those who persecuted and ultimately killed him. There are days when we can side with the psalmist, who lashes out in anger against his enemies. Other times, we know Jesus was right that we should not return violence for violence, that we must pray for our enemies, and that we must love even those who do not love us. How can we do these things? Is there a place for war and violence in our faith? As you read, study, and contemplate these sessions, take time to look deeply within yourself. Although it is difficult, self-examination can enable our learning and activate our engagement with the world and our faith.

However it is an issue that must be faced, says Peter C. Craigie, because it has serious ramifications for contemporary Christian attitudes about war. Professor Craigie categorizes the problems into two kinds - personal and external. The personal problems arise from the Christian's attempt to grapple with the emphasis on war in a book fundamental to faith. Three areas are considered here: the representation of God as warrior; God's revelation of himself in a book which preserves an extensive amount of war literature; and the seemingly conflicting ethics taught in the Old Testament and the New Testament. The external problems are critiques against the Bible and the Christian faith, based on the war-like nature of the Old Testament and the close association between Christianity and war throughout history. Only by examining and understanding the problem of war in the Old Testament will Christians be able to respond intelligently to attacks on their faith, to educate their youth in the nature of war, and to influence modern attitudes toward war. Peter C.Craigie was Academic Vice-President of the University of Calgary, professor of religious studies, and authored The Book of Deuteronomy in the New International Commentary on the Old Testament series (Eerdmans).
