D'autres n'admettent pas le sacrifice dans la société moderne et préfèrent le réserver aux sociétés traditionnelles. A l'encontre de ces évidences, cet essai prétend au contraire éclairer une catégorie par l'autre. Il soutient, quoi qu'en pensent les stratèges, que la guerre est la transformation du pouvoir sacrificiel en pouvoir absolu et sans reste. Il soutient que le sacrifice, en dépit de ce que pensent les anthropologues, est une destruction de l'autre. Dans les deux cas, la violence a besoin du pouvoir de symbolisation pour atteindre son objectif d'anéantissement. Prenant comme matériau de réflexion l'actualité notamment, cet essai tente de montrer que les guerres " totales " contemporaines sont tout à la fois l'expression d'un ordre juridique où l'état d'exception fonde la souveraineté et d'une raison sacrificielle que l'exigence de " zéro mort " parvient à peine à masquer. Mais rien, cependant, dans la guerre ou le sacrifice, ne fait de ces catégories des événements nécessaires. A côté du mécanisme sacrificiel, il y a un autre procédé de régulation de la violence, celui du contrat social. La réhabilitation du politique n'empêche certes pas la guerre, mais au moins la réintègre-t-elle dans l'univers des intérêts et de l'équilibre auxquels obéit l'existence sociale. Cet essai entend ainsi renouer non seulement avec la théorie anthropologique de l'échange, mais aussi avec la pensée du philosophe Thomas Hobbes et celle du théoricien de la guerre Carl von Clausewitz.
