Book La grande aventure de l humanit

Download or read book La grande aventure de l humanit written by Arnold Joseph Toynbee and published by Paris ; Bruxelles : Elsevier Séquoia. This book was released on 1977 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Conscience of Humankind

Download or read book The Conscience of Humankind written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traumatic experiences of persecution and genocide have changed traditional views of literature. The discussion of historical truth versus aesthetic autonomy takes an unexpected turn when confronted with the experiences of the victims of the Holocaust, the Gulag Archipelago, the Cultural Revolution, Apartheid and other crimes against humanity. The question is whether - and, if so, to what extent - literary imagination may depart from historical truth. In general, the first reactions to traumatic historical experiences are autobiographical statements, written by witnesses of the events. However, the second and third generations, the sons and daughters of the victims as well as of the victimizers, tend to free themselves from this generic restriction and claim their own way of remembering the history of their parents and grandparents. They explore their own limits of representation, and feel free to use a variety of genres; they turn to either realist or postmodernist, ironic or grotesque modes of writing.

Book Global Society and Human Rights

Download or read book Global Society and Human Rights written by Vittorio Cotesta and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-02-17 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Society and Human Rights tries to grasp and reconstruct the processes of global unification and the shaping of a common feeling of humanity: the conviction, in different cultural contexts, of the unity of mankind and the existence of inalienable human rights. Contrary to the past, the quest for the unity of mankind does not imply the denial of differences; on the contrary, it brings to light the common traits of the social and political organizations from which the potential recognition and the assertion of individual differences arise. The basic claim set forth in this book is that global society could be the context for the actual assertion of human rights.

Book Architecture Ethics and Technology

Download or read book Architecture Ethics and Technology written by Louise Pelletier and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1994-03-10 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enlightened discussion of all relevant aspects of architecture shows the necessity for revision of commonly held assumptions about the nature of architectural history, theory, representation, and ideation; the production of buildings in the postindustrial city; and professional ethics. These topics provide the basis for the fourteen interdisciplinary papers presented here. The introductory section includes an examination of the epistemological origins of technology in the early modern European context and two alternative visions of ethics and its potential relevance for architecture. The second part presents four perspectives on important questions about how we represent buildings and the ethical values involved in that representation. "Ethics and Poetics in the Context of Technological Production" considers the role of philosophical ethics (i.e., a rational structure of categories in architectural practice) and the possibility, and desirability, of incorporating ethical reflections into the generation of architectural form. "The Architectural Uses of History and Narrative in a Technocratic World" explores alternatives for articulating an ethical attitude in forms of discourse other than philosophy and science. These papers were originally presented at the bilingual symposium "Architecture, Ethics, and Technology" held at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal in 1991.

Book On the Poetry of Spenser and the Form of Romances

Download or read book On the Poetry of Spenser and the Form of Romances written by John Arthos and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1956, this scholarly study of Spenser’s poetry shows how the conceptions of his earlier work in complaints, visions and pastorals were of continuing importance to the development of The Faerie Queene. Following on from Bishop Hurd’s Letters on Chivalry and Romance, John Arthos discusses the congeniality of romance and allegory. The form and substance of Spenser’s lyrical and meditative poetry were combined with his interest in romances to govern the progress of the great work, and in the Mutabilitie Cantos they assert a dominant emphasis. In continuing many of the features characteristic of medieval romances, in taking up the innovations of Boiardo and Ariosto, and in giving expression to a view of life and especially of love that had not been made before in romantic literature, Spenser set himself a framework of so many and such complex interests that he failed to construct in The Faerie Queene the unity one might expect after reading the letter to Raleigh. The author believes that Tasso’s theories provide the terms that explain how Spenser meant to effect the unity of his poem, and that they also explain why the Mutabilitie Cantos belong to a radically different conception. Acknowledging that the allegories in Spenser’s work are obscure or unevenly developed John Arthos’ book maintains the idea that romance and allegory were integrally conceived in the Poem.

Book Robert Triffin

Download or read book Robert Triffin written by Ivo Maes and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book provides an intellectual biography of Robert Triffin. Triffin (1911-1993) played a key role in the international monetary debates in the postwar period. He became famous with trenchant analyses of the vulnerabilities of the international monetary system (the Triffin dilemma), predicting the end of the Bretton Woods system. Triffin was a child of the interwar period, marked by the Great Depression and the rise of fascism. He became not only an eminent academic but also an influential policy advisor. In the mid-1940s he worked at the Federal Reserve, participating in several monetary reform missions in Latin America. Thereafter, Triffin played an important role in the creation of the European Payments Union. In his later academic life, Triffin put forward proposals for reforming the international monetary system. But because he doubted that they would come to fruition, he also developed plans for regional monetary integration, particularly in Europe, where he became the monetary advisor of Jean Monnet. With proposals for a European Reserve Fund and a European currency unit, he became one of the intellectual fathers of Europe's monetary union. Throughout his life Triffin remained faithful to the ideals of his youth. The young Triffin was indignant about the Versailles Treaty, while the old Triffin fulminated against the Vietnam war. For him, economics was a way to contribute to a better world. He was strongly attached to his independence and the pursuit of a better and more peaceful world. He was a monk in economists' clothing"--

Book Decouvertes a Travers La Meditation

Download or read book Decouvertes a Travers La Meditation written by Julien Bouchard and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
